As a Front-End Waste Collection Driver, you will be responsible for operating front-end trucks that service a variety of multi-family residential and commercial routes, efficiently removing and transporting waste or recyclables in accordance with customer contracts.

This role involves servicing multiple clients daily based on assigned routes. The collected waste must then be transferred to the appropriate disposal station, landfill, or drop-off site.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate commercial frontload or ancillary equipment along designated routes to mechanically collect solid waste and transport it to post-collection facilities.
  • Access container enclosures or gates to retrieve cans. As necessary, maneuver 3-4-yard cans on castors into position for dumping.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections; complete and submit a vehicle condition report at the end of each shift.
  • Interact courteously with customers and the general public along the route to address inquiries or respond to requests; inform the supervisor of any issues requiring management attention.
  • Maintain cleanliness by removing loose trash from the truck and surrounding area during the dumping process to ensure a tidy customer site and safety along roads and highways.
  • Keep and submit a logbook, daily route/productivity sheet, and vehicle condition report as mandated by law or company policy.
  • Skillfully maneuver the truck in and out of tight spaces, utilizing mirrors for backing up.
  • Utilize a key map and GPS to locate service addresses.
  • Adhere to safe operating practices, including lockout/tagout procedures to ensure proper truck operation.
  • Monitor operations to detect loose debris, using mirrors or direct sight and/or listening for debris falling onto the truck during the dumping operation; visually inspect the customer site before and after dumping.
  • Comply with all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions while performing all duties. Follow all federal, state/provincial, local, and company safety and vehicle operation regulations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of commercial truck driving experience or a CDL school certificate.
  • Must meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate the truck and associated equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Understanding of the truck and its components, along with basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control equipment operations; maneuver the truck in and out of tight spaces, using mirrors to back distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
  • Ability to identify unacceptable waste (such as gasoline or other flammable materials).
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and comprehending related documents and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Capability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple limbs while sitting or standing.
  • Adherence to all company safety policies and procedures.

Physical/Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus due to constant vehicle maneuvering in tight and high-traffic areas.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds. Occasionally move/push up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to enter and exit the truck to open doors multiple times during a shift.
  • Ability to climb to the top of the truck to ensure the load is secured before transport.
  • Sitting is required 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving.
  • Ability to work in typically loud conditions.

Working Conditions:
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy conditions, extreme temperatures (depending on the season), moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work in an outdoor environment up to 100% of the time.
  • Operate routes away from the branch location continuously throughout the day.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Constantly work in motor vehicle traffic conditions.
  • The work environment is typically loud.
