Job Overview

The Support Specialist is tasked with ensuring the safety, supervision, and well-being of the shelter's residents. This role involves delivering a range of services that cater to both the physical and emotional needs of individuals seeking assistance. The Support Specialist must remain vigilant, responding promptly to inquiries, welcoming guests, and managing emergency situations with professionalism and care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional boundaries and uphold confidentiality at all times.
  • Serve as a compassionate role model for guests.
  • Embrace the mission of Catholic Charities to assist those in need and advocate for justice.
  • Adhere to shelter policies and procedures.
  • Advocate for the health and safety of all residents, ensuring their overall well-being.
  • Oversee the cleanliness and security of the facility and its resources.
  • Prepare and serve meals according to the daily schedule.
  • Conduct intake assessments for new residents during shifts.
  • Provide crisis counseling and assess individual needs.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution among guests, enforcing shelter rules as necessary.
  • Offer relevant information and referrals to local services.
  • Distribute personal hygiene items, over-the-counter medications, and emergency clothing as needed.
  • Document shift activities and resident interactions in the shelter log.
  • Engage with business partners in a professional manner.
  • Report maintenance issues to the Program Director as they arise.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director to address the daily needs of residents.
  • Work during holidays that coincide with scheduled shifts.
  • Perform duties in a facility that operates as an emergency shelter and transitional housing program, interacting with staff, the public, and individuals facing behavioral challenges related to addiction and mental health.
  • Utilize computers, phones, and kitchen equipment as required, demonstrating keen attention to detail and strong listening skills.
  • May involve occasional local travel.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working with homeless populations or a combination of relevant internship and work experience is required.
  • Knowledge and training in substance abuse and mental health issues are essential.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse and sometimes challenging client groups.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Capability to complete daily program documentation accurately.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with a focus on detail and effective communication.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, with a commitment to maintain certification as required.
  • Physical ability to respond quickly to various situations, including lifting up to 25 pounds.
