Avalanche Fusion is a pioneering start-up based in Seattle, dedicated to the development of fusion microreactors that provide clean and energy-dense power generation. Our innovative methodology enables us to build, test, and refine reactors within a matter of days to weeks. The modular design caters to various applications, ranging from challenging environments to deep-sea vehicles and lunar power solutions.

About the Opportunity:

As Avalanche Fusion expands, we are seeking a Director of Science. This leadership role is essential for guiding and directing the scientific research associated with our fusion test cells. The ideal candidate will possess a profound understanding of physics principles, exceptional managerial capabilities, and a visionary approach to foster innovation and meet organizational objectives. This is a chance to contribute to a mission of significant importance—bringing compact fusion reactors to market to combat climate change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and oversee the scientific direction and strategy of projects, ensuring clear goals and focus on tasks that advance project timelines.
  • Organize intermediate milestones efficiently to support testing, design evaluations, and compliance with system requirements.
  • Engage with the science team to develop both short-term and long-term research agendas in collaboration with project management.
  • Provide mentorship and support to a high-performing team of scientists and researchers, promoting their professional development.
  • Ensure the scientific integrity of projects while remaining informed about emerging technologies that could influence future research.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional management teams to align scientific initiatives with broader business goals.
  • Document and communicate scientific progress, including experiment summaries and simulation updates, to company executives and team members.
  • Maintain accountability for clear communication regarding technical advancements and challenges.
  • Exercise final decision-making authority on technical approaches, balancing resource allocation with scientific rigor and fundraising timelines.
  • Guide and support the publication strategy and planning.
  • Travel for conferences, supplier visits, and company events as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in physics, engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Over 10 years of experience in scientific research, demonstrating strong leadership and successful project management.
  • Proven experience in leading high-performing teams and managing complex scientific challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in presenting and collaborating with internal stakeholders.
  • Prior experience in managing physics research projects.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic design and analysis.
  • Experience in designing and analyzing high voltage circuits.
  • A dedicated and enthusiastic attitude with a history of overcoming obstacles.

Preferred Skills:

  • MBA or PMP certification.
  • Experience with high voltage systems in vacuum environments.
  • Familiarity with high energy plasmas.
  • Experience with plasma simulation codes, including Particle-in-Cell (PIC).
  • Background in the fusion industry.
  • Proficiency in COMSOL/FEM analysis.
