Position Overview
Role SummaryAs a dynamic and evolving nonprofit organization, Greater Public is poised for significant expansion. The Chief Philanthropy Officer will be instrumental in crafting and implementing strategies and campaigns aimed at enhancing revenue to fulfill the organization's strategic objectives.
This role reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer and oversees designated staff members. The Chief Philanthropy Officer will spearhead relationship-driven fundraising initiatives at Greater Public. Through personal engagement and the management of the donor pipeline, this position is vital to the success of the fundraising program.
Key Responsibilities:
– Develop and manage a personal portfolio of donors with a target revenue goal ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000 annually, typically maintaining an active portfolio of 50 donors and up to 100 qualified prospects.
– Enhance leadership annual gifts ($2,500 – $10,000) and major gifts ($10,000+) from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities through effective solicitation strategies, intentional prospect development, and meaningful engagement opportunities.
– Establish a structured relationship management process from donor identification through stewardship to ensure high donor retention rates and efficient portfolio management; create a comprehensive program for donor recognition and stewardship.
– Collaborate with the Chief Advancement Officer to design, implement, and assess an annual communications strategy that supports the development plan and raises awareness of the organization's programs and services.
– Supervise and assist frontline fundraisers in executing their responsibilities within assigned portfolios and prospective donor pools. Manage key donor engagement activities, effective prospect research, development operations, and special events with assigned staff.
– Promote legacy giving by developing a formal marketing strategy, prospect development program, and stewardship systems as part of the overall donor engagement strategy.
– Actively participate in donor identification, cultivation, and stewardship during Greater Public events and community activities. Utilize donor management systems to support fundraising efforts.
– Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, uphold accountability standards for donors, and adhere to ethical principles and professional conduct standards in fundraising.
– Contribute to a positive and rewarding work environment for staff and volunteers, supporting the stability and sustainability of the development function.
– As a leader within the organization, advocate for and advance Greater Public's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as well as strategic goals.
The Chief Philanthropy Officer should be strategic, adaptable, innovative, and skilled at guiding the ongoing development of the fundraising program and its team members. Their focus will be on identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and prospects to secure leadership annual gifts and major contributions.
Qualifications and Skills:
– A minimum of 5 years of professional fundraising experience with a proven track record of exceeding goals in securing major gifts and/or managing a fundraising program.
– A strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Greater Public, with a focus on diversifying programming and staff.
– Excellent relationship-building skills, with the ability to listen and communicate persuasively. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders, including Board members, donors, and community leaders.
– Comprehensive knowledge of the fundraising cycle, with experience in developing, implementing, and refining strategies to increase support at all levels through a collaborative team approach.
– Ability to translate strategic objectives into actionable plans; inspire others with a sense of purpose; balance overarching goals with daily operations; and maintain a results-oriented focus.
– Experience in managing and mentoring employees, volunteers, and senior leaders to achieve fundraising goals with a data-driven, empathetic, and positive approach.
– Resourcefulness, creativity, and flexibility, with the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances while driving toward clarity and solutions.
– Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to tailor communication styles to different audiences.
– Knowledge of best practices in planned giving, corporate sponsorship, and foundation and government grantmaking.
– Proficiency in donor database management systems, particularly Raiser's Edge, to facilitate effective moves management with donors and prospects.
– High integrity, respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to excellence, exemplifying ethical standards in professional fundraising.
– Previous experience in an arts or public media organization is advantageous; a personal interest in classical music is essential.
– A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
