Clinical Nurse Specialist in Oncology

Overview of the Role
The Clinical Nurse Coordinator plays a vital role in facilitating patient care in collaboration with the Attending Physician. Key responsibilities include managing patient communications, addressing patient concerns, overseeing symptom management, and providing education on disease processes and treatment options. This position ensures the effective delivery and evaluation of healthcare services for patients and their families. The Coordinator works closely with a multidisciplinary team, leveraging clinical outcome data to drive innovative and cost-effective practices within the healthcare system. All duties are performed in alignment with MedStar Medical Group's policies and standards.
Core Responsibilities
- Deliver both direct and indirect patient care while systematically assessing the quality and appropriateness of care provided.
- Collaborate with physicians and various healthcare professionals to ensure timely progress towards optimal clinical outcomes in a cost-effective manner.
- Provide comprehensive patient education regarding their disease, treatment plans, and symptom management, utilizing expertise to triage and assess patient needs effectively.
- Assist patients in navigating insurance authorizations and precertifications for necessary tests as part of their treatment plans.
- Identify and resolve operational challenges that may hinder patient outcomes promptly.
- Manage phone inquiries and patient portal communications, offering consultations and follow-up as required.
- Monitor progress and recommend improvements for Performance Improvement initiatives.
- Support new employee orientation and ongoing competency assessments and education.
- Engage in additional responsibilities as assigned by department leadership, ensuring flexibility in role execution.
Qualifications Required
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing is mandatory.
- Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
Experience
- 1-2 years of relevant clinical experience is required.
- 1-2 years of experience in ambulatory care and oncology is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the District of Columbia is required.
- CPR certification (including BLS and NRP) from a recognized provider is required within 90 days.
- Additional unit or specialty certifications may vary by department.
- Oncology Nurse Certification (OCN) is preferred within one year.
