Job Overview

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The Surgical Support Specialist is an integral member of the surgical team, collaborating closely with the lead surgeon during both invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures. This role involves anticipating the needs of the surgical team and assisting the surgeon with various tasks, including equipment selection, incision management, hemostasis, and closure of surgical sites, among other responsibilities as designated by the primary surgeon.

COLLABORATION

This position primarily interacts with: administrative personnel, physicians, medical staff, patients, and visitors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the surgeon during operations by passing necessary instruments, providing retraction, suturing, and performing other duties within the defined scope of practice.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout the surgical process, including hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving for oneself and other team members.
  • Prepare and drape the patient appropriately for surgical interventions.
  • Safely identify and handle surgical instruments during procedures.
  • Ensure the integrity of sterile packages and confirm expiration dates of all items introduced into the sterile field.
  • Open sterile instrument packs, drapes, solutions, and supplies while preserving sterility during transfer.
  • Connect sterile devices and equipment from the sterile field to non-sterile sources (e.g., suction, cautery, camera, lighting).
  • Prepare and manage medications utilized within the sterile environment.
  • Identify, prepare, and provide sutures to the surgeon as needed.
  • Participate in the counting of sponges, needles, and instruments in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Recognize and communicate any breaches in sterile technique by oneself or others.
  • Properly manage tissue specimens, including appropriate packaging.
  • Apply sterile dressings post-procedure without contaminating the dressing or surgical site.
  • Prepare the operative site as required.
  • Assist in circulating duties within the operating suite under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Utilize electrocautery equipment in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Position patients to ensure proper circulation and access for the surgeon, including immobilization on the operating table.
  • Assist with patient suctioning, draining, and irrigation as necessary.
  • Engage in annual peer competency evaluations.
  • Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings as mandated.
  • Deliver exemplary customer service.
  • Uphold confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve departmental goals and maintain positive employee relations, inter-departmental objectives, and infection control standards.
  • Exhibit professionalism and punctuality in all interactions.
  • Address practical problems and interpret various instructions provided in written and oral formats.
  • Attend required meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited surgical first assistant program.
  • BLS certification is mandatory.

EXPERIENCE

  • Preferred minimum of one year of experience in orthopedic and general surgery.
