Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a TREAT Nuclear Engineer to contribute to our Fuel Development, Performance, & Qualification department. Our team operates on a 9x80 schedule, providing every other Friday off.

Your role will involve applying nuclear engineering principles and methodologies to design, evaluate, and analyze nuclear systems and equipment. You will explore innovative materials pertinent to radiation detection, nuclear fuels, and reactor technology. Additionally, you will investigate the nuclear fuel cycle to identify the most cost-effective applications of materials and the safest disposal methods for waste products, while addressing challenges related to safeguards and verification of nonproliferation measures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with designers, analysts, and stakeholders to establish experimental requirements or to create packaging and handling specifications for spent nuclear fuel.
  • Utilize advanced nuclear engineering design principles, theories, and concepts (including reactor fuel and packaging) to break down project objectives into defined and manageable design requirements.
  • Employ best practice design methodologies, technologies, and processes to create and validate designs that meet specified requirements.
  • Define testing, inspection, and quality standards to ensure that critical design features are upheld.
  • Oversee or ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement activities adhere to the established design.
  • Conduct integrated analyses to confirm that storage, transportation, and disposal requirements, along with facility safety bases, are satisfied.
  • Perform analysis and design tasks that support project interactions with sponsors, operations, and engineering teams to ensure that project-related activities align with facility authorizations.
  • Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and validate design efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Level 2: Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline with 2 years of experience, or a Master's in Nuclear Engineering or a related field with no experience.
  • Level 3: Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering or a related engineering discipline with 5 years of experience, or a Master's in Nuclear Engineering or a related field with 2 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with Bison and/or RELAP5-3D.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.

Compensation Information:

  • The salary range for this position is: Level 2 ($75,804 - $155,496) / Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588). Compensation decisions at Idaho National Laboratory are based on factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and contributing to an inclusive work environment is required.
  • This is a testing designated position; a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout employment are mandatory.
  • This is a multi-level posting; placement will be based on the depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
