New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Position Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. The organization aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various initiatives, including the development and implementation of programs that minimize the reliance on incarceration and foster economic opportunities, conducting original research to ascertain effective practices, and disseminating insights gained from both programming and research to those seeking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center operates with a workforce of approximately 900 employees and manages a budget of $100 million, achieving its mission through three core areas: creating and scaling operational programs to test innovative solutions, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and providing expert guidance and policy support to justice reform advocates worldwide.

Operational Programs

The Center's operational programs, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, are designed to test innovative solutions, tackle complex issues, and strive for systemic reform within the justice framework. These initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, and court-based efforts aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive changes for individuals and families. The outcomes of these programs include safer neighborhoods, decreased incarceration rates, and improved community perceptions of justice.

Research Initiatives

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals who are either academically trained or possess lived experiences. They conduct research both domestically and internationally on a variety of issues related to the criminal-legal system and justice. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting exploratory community-based studies, and providing research translation and strategic planning for system stakeholders. The Center has published studies on topics such as court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution, with a focus on making their findings actionable for communities, policymakers, and practitioners.

Policy and Expert Support

The Center offers hands-on planning and implementation support to various jurisdictions in areas of reform, including problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. The expert assistance provided encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and hosting site visits to operational programs.

Support Structure

A dedicated support team within the Center ensures the seamless operation of various functions, including finance, legal, technology, human resources, fundraising, real estate, and communications. Comprising 15% of the organization's workforce, these teams deliver essential infrastructure support and innovative solutions aligned with the Center's mission and values.
