Job Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is accountable to the Clinical Director and plays a crucial role in delivering expert nursing care to patients following outpatient surgical interventions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receives patient information from the anesthesiologist and circulating nurse, ensuring proper identification upon patient arrival in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • Monitors vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and temperature upon patient admission to the PACU and throughout their recovery period, documenting all findings accurately.
  • Conducts thorough assessments of the patient’s condition, focusing on airway management, cardiac rhythm, consciousness level, and the status of the surgical site upon PACU admission and as needed thereafter.
  • Confirms physician orders, administers prescribed medications, and performs necessary procedures as directed.
  • Ensures that all prescriptions are delivered to the appropriate individual, such as the patient or a responsible adult.
  • When the patient meets discharge criteria, the PACU Nurse will:
    • Notify the anesthesiologist or surgeon for patient evaluation,
    • Cease intravenous therapy as required,
    • Provide comprehensive discharge instructions to the patient’s family or accompanying adult,
    • Facilitate the patient’s exit in a safe manner, whether via wheelchair or assisted ambulation, based on their condition.
  • Completes all required documentation promptly and accurately.
  • At the end of the shift, the PACU Nurse will:
    • Return any necessary items to the reception area,
    • Assist in preparing the PACU and preoperative areas for the following day,
    • Ensure the facility is secured according to established protocols.
  • Identifies and removes any malfunctioning equipment from the clinical area, reporting issues to the Clinical Director immediately.
  • Assists in the receipt and storage of medical supplies as necessary.
  • Disposes of contaminated materials in accordance with safety standards.
  • Provides follow-up support through post-operative phone calls as required.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of the operative log as assigned.
  • Engages in the Adverse Incident reporting process when necessary.
  • May function as a Preoperative Nurse as directed by the Clinical Director.
  • Participates in assigned committees and assists with additional duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Current unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or a Compact State.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in an ambulatory surgery environment or acute care recovery room.
Work Environment
  • Combination of medical office and procedure room settings.
  • Well-lit and ventilated spaces with adequate room for patient care.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases and other clinic-related conditions.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Requires the ability to sit, stand, bend, and reach for 6-8 hours daily.
  • Involves intermittent physical activity, including walking, light lifting, and maneuvering equipment.
  • Must be capable of bending and kneeling as necessary.
