Compensation:
$27.40 per hour.

Appointment Type:

This is a Temporary Exempt position, excluded from the competitive Civil Service examination process, serving at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The appointment duration shall not exceed 36 months.


Work Location:
Various locations associated with the Police Department.
Work Schedule: 20 hours per week.

Position Overview:

The Cadet program is designed to provide valuable service to the City of San Francisco, the Police Department, and the community.

As a Cadet, you will be recognized as a future leader within the community. The program's objectives include exposing participants to various facets of police work, preparing them for careers in law enforcement.

The Cadet program aims to cultivate quality candidates for law enforcement roles, including but not limited to:
- Police Officer
- Community Police Services Aide
- 911 Dispatcher

A structured framework has been established to define the duties and responsibilities of Police Cadets. Expectations include high moral standards, academic excellence, sound judgment, and active community involvement.

Cadets will assist the Police Department and serve as a bridge between law enforcement and the youth in our community.

Under the guidance of a sworn officer, Cadets will perform a variety of civilian field and office duties, including but not limited to:

  • Operating and monitoring security equipment
  • Assisting with security at various locations
  • Engaging with the public respectfully
  • Learning and applying police department regulations and procedures
  • Supporting investigative units as needed
  • Providing first aid and CPR in emergencies
  • Participating in community engagement activities
  • Maintaining records and assisting with clerical tasks

Cadet Responsibilities:
  • Learn the structure and functions of a Police Department
  • Develop skills for effective public interaction
  • Communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Understand and implement police department policies
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited college or university, taking a minimum of 12 semester/18 quarter units towards a degree while maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0. A valid driver's license is also required.


Age Requirement:

Candidates may apply at 17 years of age but must be at least 18 years old to be appointed.


Background Investigation:

A background investigation will be conducted prior to employment to assess suitability. This may include checks of criminal history, drug/alcohol screening, and other relevant personal history.

Reasons for disqualification may include controlled substance use, felony convictions, or other relevant factors.
