Position Overview: Deputy Sheriff Trainee

Qualifications:

In accordance with California State Law, candidates for the Deputy Sheriff Trainee and Deputy Sheriff roles must meet the following criteria:

Education: A high school diploma or successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test or an equivalent high school equivalency assessment approved by CDE, or completion of a minimum of 60 college units from an accredited institution.

Knowledge: Familiarity with civil laws, codes, ordinances, and recent judicial rulings; principles and practices of law enforcement, criminal investigation, basic psychology, evidentiary rules, arrest laws, and court procedures.

Skills/Abilities: Collaborate effectively with others to resolve issues; comprehend legal documents, law enforcement manuals, and court rulings; interpret standard street and highway maps; adhere to instructions; perform effectively under pressure; demonstrate leadership and control in rapidly evolving environments; maintain impartiality and transparency while making accurate observations; endure repeated physical exertion; produce comprehensive and precise reports and correspondence; communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse individuals, both orally and in writing; lead by example through professional and compassionate interactions with community members; meet the State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) medical, physical, and psychological requirements for law enforcement.

Licensure/Certification:
  • Possession of a Class C California driver license or equivalent (for both classifications).
Deputy Sheriff Trainee: Eligibility for the State of California P.O.S.T. law enforcement academy and field officer training OR successful completion of the State of California P.O.S.T. law enforcement academy and eligibility for field officer training.

Additional Requirements:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age in accordance with P.O.S.T and AB-89 Peace Officers: Minimum Qualifications.
  • Prohibition on tobacco product use at any time for employees hired by the County after October 1, 2004.
