Position Overview
Under supervision, this role involves engaging in active law enforcement responsibilities aimed at safeguarding individuals and property, investigating criminal activities, and apprehending lawbreakers. The position also entails providing security for the Superior Court and executing civil processes issued by the Court, along with a variety of technical law enforcement tasks.
Eligibility Criteria
This recruitment is specifically for candidates who are currently employed or have previously worked at a California POST-approved law enforcement agency as a Peace Officer within the last three years, or those who have successfully completed a California POST-certified Regular Basic Course within the same timeframe and hold a California Basic Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) certificate. Individuals interested in starting a career in law enforcement who do not meet these criteria should refer to the Deputy Sheriff Cadet - Unclassified job bulletin.
Compensation for Duties
Those assigned to patrol and administrative functions will receive a 10% pay differential in addition to their base salary.
Typical Responsibilities
The following tasks are representative of the duties performed by employees in this classification, though not all employees will perform every task:
- Patrol designated areas to maintain law and order and deter criminal activity;
- Respond to various calls, including criminal complaints and accidents;
- Conduct initial investigations by interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence;
- Testify in court as required;
- Prepare detailed reports based on investigative findings;
- Make arrests based on observations and warrants;
- Transport detainees to correctional facilities;
- Serve legal documents such as summons and garnishments;
- Maintain order in courtrooms and provide security;
- May offer training in various areas within the Sheriff's Office;
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Applicants must possess sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the tasks outlined above.
Special Requirements
- Applicants must be at least 20 years old to apply, but cannot be appointed until they turn 21.
- Completion of a California POST Basic Course within the last three years is required.
- Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification throughout employment.
- Possess a valid California Driver's License prior to appointment.
- No felony convictions are permitted.
- Must pass a comprehensive medical examination and psychological evaluation.
- Must demonstrate physical fitness to perform job functions.
- Complete a thorough background investigation.
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
- Understanding of state and local laws and regulations;
- Familiarity with modern policing practices;
- Proficiency in investigation techniques and evidence preservation;
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations;
- Knowledge of self-defense tactics and first aid;
- Familiarity with local geography and computer applications.
- Ability to work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays.
