As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in advancing our mission to build a just and inclusive economy where all workers have expansive rights and thrive in good jobs.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the National UI Movement Network: Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to build a national network of federal, state, and local advocates working to ensure unemployment benefits empower workers and provide reliable, sufficient economic support to all workers, particularly those historically excluded.
- Advocate for UI Policy Reform: Collaborate with key constituencies, allied organizations, and policymakers to advance transformative, systems change that lays the foundation for long-term economic security for Black, immigrant, and other workers of color, and their families.
- Develop and Implement UI Strategies: Refine a compelling vision and strategies for advancing UI policy reform, including ongoing engagement with the U.S. Department of Labor to improve the UI system.
- Represent NELP in Advocacy Coalitions: Serve as a national resource to state and federal partners and for campaigns across the country by providing research, legal, policy, and strategic support, such as developing model legislation, policy briefs, and analyses.
- Communicate Effectively: Draft reports, op-eds, blogs, and educational materials, and engage in strategic communications to advance NELP's mission and goals.
- Support a Workplace Culture of Excellence: Contribute to a workplace culture where all team members grow and develop professionally, and actively contribute to NELP's work in becoming an anti-racist organization that reflects and embodies internally the values of social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Advocacy Experience: Five+ years' experience working on unemployment insurance issues or promoting UI reform, with a proven track record of working in coalition with diverse groups, such as community-based organizations, legal advocates, labor, and worker centers.
- Education and Skills: A JD, Master's degree, or PhD in a relevant field, or equivalent demonstrable experience, with strong racial equity competencies and the ability to develop and implement a vision and strategies for advancing UI policy reform.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Skilled at conducting high-quality and thorough policy research and analysis, and able to convey complex concepts in compelling and digestible work products, such as memos, reports, op-eds, toolkits, and/or issue briefs.
- Leadership and Collaboration: Proven ability to lead and collaborate with diverse groups, including staff, partners, and stakeholders, to advance NELP's mission and goals.
Black Lawyers offers a comprehensive benefits package, including full coverage of family health insurance, a medical reimbursement plan, generous vacation and sick leave, plus additional organization-wide holidays, significant contribution from employer to a retirement plan (both an unelected contribution and employer match); and for qualifying participants, up to 26 weeks paid parental leave, 12 weeks paid medical leave, 6 weeks of paid family medical caregiving leave, a sabbatical leave program, childcare/eldercare reimbursement assistance, and student loan repayment assistance.
