POSITION TITLE: Culinary Supervisor and Kitchen Coordinator - Full-Time (35 hours)

REPORTS TO: Director of Social Services

COMPENSATION: $19.00 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT:

SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Culinary Supervisor and Kitchen Coordinator at Jarvie Memorial Family Lodge plays a vital role within the shelter program, overseeing food services and ensuring that nutritious meals are provided for participants every day of the week. This includes the planning and preparation of wholesome meals, utilizing donations as well as additional ingredients from the food warehouse, while maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment. The responsibilities of this role encompass managing food services, the kitchen, and dining area during meal times, and providing clear guidance to staff in their absence. Staff will receive training opportunities in these areas and are expected to support each other during times of leave.

ESSENTIAL MEAL PREPARATION/COOKING RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare nutritious meals for residents using donations and supplemental ingredients from the food warehouse.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen, including all utensils, cookware, and appliances.
  • Oversee weekly menu planning, display meals, and maintain a log of all food served.
  • Ensure that the kitchen and pantry are well-stocked with food and non-food supplies.
  • Monitor participant responsibilities in the kitchen and dining area post-meals.
  • Compile daily reports on tasks completed and any incidents.
  • Provide orientation, guidance, and supervision for volunteers.
  • Be available to cover meals when other staff members are unavailable.
ESSENTIAL TEAM DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Address emergency situations that may arise, making independent decisions within established policy guidelines. Provide crisis intervention and implement security measures as necessary.
  • Collaborate closely with other staff, case managers, advocates, and program directors on participant plans, objectives, and safety issues.
  • Demonstrate respect and dignity towards co-workers, volunteers, and participants/residents. Communicate professionally through all channels.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, logs, and documentation as required.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and keep updated on communications from colleagues.
  • Be prepared to work independently during shifts when necessary.

  • Professional experience in food service.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Empathy towards participants in crisis situations.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new skills.
  • Understanding of the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Self-motivated with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain composure in challenging environments.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Must complete and adhere to Protect the Mission requirements, including passing a background check.
  • Possess or obtain a WA State Food Worker Card.
  • Ability to accurately record work hours.
SOFTWARE-RELATED SKILLS:
  • Proficient in computer skills for typing menus, reports, and general notes; familiarity with email platforms.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to perform various physical activities including sitting, walking, standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to operate a telephone and computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to safely navigate stairs.
  • Ability to perform cleaning tasks such as sweeping and mopping.
