Position Overview: Green Plains is expanding its Commercial Team and seeks an analytical professional to enhance its capabilities. The Commodity Analyst will play a pivotal role in supporting various initiatives, including fundamental and financial assessments, trade facilitation, marketing and procurement strategies, financial modeling, and comprehensive risk management. This position involves collaboration with multiple departments such as Logistics, Accounting, Risk, Credit, and Senior Management. The selected candidate will report to a product lead, such as the Director of Ethanol Marketing or Director of Corn Procurement.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide analytical support to the Commercial Team through fundamental and financial assessments, financial modeling, and risk management strategy analysis.
  • Conduct thorough research on diverse commodities, collecting data on supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical factors, weather influences, and economic indicators affecting commodity pricing.
  • Evaluate historical and real-time data to uncover trends, correlations, and anomalies, producing insightful reports for the commercial trading team.
  • Develop and maintain supply and demand forecasts, market trends, and related opinions.
  • Prepare and deliver clear and concise reports summarizing market analysis findings, including strategic recommendations for trading and risk management.
  • Engage directly with customers and suppliers in trade support and marketing/procurement functions.
  • Oversee market risk associated with specific customers, vendors, or suppliers.
  • Monitor and assess risk positions, both physical and financial, identifying opportunities to enhance profitability and mitigate losses.
  • Generate profit and loss projections for various trading positions and portfolios.
  • Implement financial hedges, coordinating with external brokers and internal stakeholders to minimize company exposure.
  • Stay informed about the competitive and evolving biofuel market landscape and its potential impacts on the organization, including regulatory changes.
  • Collaborate with departments such as accounting, FP&A, risk, and logistics to remain updated on market developments and their implications for trading strategies.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines and company policies in all operations.
  • Perform additional duties as required, recognizing that the above list is not exhaustive.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline.
  • 0 to 3+ years of experience in commodity analysis, trading, or related roles.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, statistical software, data visualization tools).
  • Demonstrated analytical, quantitative, and modeling skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Basic programming knowledge (SQL, VBA, Python, etc.) is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A genuine interest in commodities markets and a willingness to learn in a dynamic trading environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, meet deadlines, and thrive in high-pressure situations.
  • A proactive and results-oriented approach to work.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including frequent sitting, computer use, and telephone communication.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel.
