Position: Pathologist Assistant

Qualifications:
- Valid State of New York License for Pathologist Assistant is mandatory.
- Proficient in Cryo-rotary Microtome operation (Leica, Microm, Tissue-Tek).

Laboratory Information System:
- Familiarity with Epic Beaker is essential.
- Understanding of policies and procedures related to Surgical Cutting Room and Autopsy techniques.
- Competence in operating all equipment utilized in both Surgical Cutting Room and autopsy suite.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Receive specimens from surgical and endoscopic procedures.
  • Perform clerical tasks in the Surgical Pathology cutting room, including order entry and updates in the LIS (Epic Beaker).
  • Exhibit strong organizational skills and prioritize daily tasks effectively.
  • Handle small, uncomplicated tissue samples with care.
  • Conduct gross examinations and submit appropriate tissue sections from complex surgical specimens for histological diagnostic evaluation.
  • Prepare and section tissue samples for frozen sections at 5 microns using a cryostat.
  • Stain routine Hematoxylin/Eosin.
  • Ensure high laboratory standards through routine work and quality control.
  • Process requests from pathology residents and attending physicians to complete work orders.
  • Procure fresh tissue samples for research and specialized studies (Cytogenetics, flow cytometry, EM, etc.).
  • Organize, store, and retrieve surgical specimens until disposal.
  • Utilize voice recognition software to document gross examinations of all specimen types.
  • Understand specimen rotation and retrieval techniques in the cutting room and storage areas.
  • Assist in organ evisceration and brain removal during autopsy cases.
  • Dispose of tissue and chemical waste properly in the cutting room and histology lab.
  • Perform additional functions as required by departmental needs.
  • Train other staff members on cutting room procedures when necessary.
