Position Overview

The El Paso County Department of Public Works is seeking a dedicated Stormwater Inspector with exceptional technical and interpersonal abilities. This role is ideal for individuals who are proactive and passionate about contributing positively to our environment and community.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field inspections related to:

  • New developments
  • Public Works projects
  • Privately-owned and County-owned facilities
  • Citizen stormwater complaints

These inspections ensure compliance with the County's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit and relevant engineering standards. The candidate will collaborate with a small team of inspectors who possess expertise in grading, drainage systems, and sediment control measures for construction sites.

Our team emphasizes collaboration and mentorship, providing training opportunities that cater to various interests and promote career advancement.

Work Schedule

This position typically operates Monday through Thursday, with hours from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, though this may be subject to change.

Essential Duties

As an Inspector, you will:

  • Conduct inspections on construction and repair projects to ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Analyze tests on materials such as soil aggregates and concrete to verify compliance with specified standards.
  • Address inquiries and concerns from the public and other entities, assisting in issue resolution.
  • Oversee construction functions within subdivisions, ensuring compliance with financial assurances and public right-of-way standards.
  • Evaluate erosion prevention measures at project sites and recommend enforcement actions as necessary.
  • Manage Underground Facility Locate Requests and maintain records of excavation activities.
  • Investigate drainage complaints and prepare related reports.
  • Compile technical data for engineering activities related to stormwater management.
  • Consult with various stakeholders regarding compliance with engineering criteria.
  • Review technical plans and conduct material testing as required.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with relevant experience varying by position level:

  • Inspector I: One year of professional experience in a related field.
  • Inspector II: Three years of inspection or related experience.
  • Inspector III: Five years of inspection or related experience.

Licenses and Certifications

All candidates must maintain a valid driver's license and complete necessary training within six months of employment.

Work Environment

This role involves both office and fieldwork, requiring travel to various construction sites and exposure to outdoor conditions. Candidates must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and navigate rough terrain.
