The Biomimicry Institute operates as a fully remote organization, with a preference for candidates located in specific states.

Position Overview

The Director of Strategic Communications is tasked with enhancing the Institute's visibility and impact through effective communication strategies, media relations, and brand stewardship. This role involves crafting and implementing comprehensive communication plans that promote the Institute's mission, leading a team of communication specialists, and integrating innovative public relations methods to engage new audiences and foster organizational development. The Director will formulate strategic initiatives for the Institute's communication goals, collaborate with leadership on evolving program and brand strategies, and oversee the enhancement of the Institute's presence across social media and international platforms.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Communications:
  • Work alongside the CEO and program leaders to create and execute a holistic communications and external affairs strategy, establishing both short- and long-term objectives to further the Institute's mission and expand awareness of its initiatives, targeting both existing and potential new audiences.
  • Partner with the CEO and program Directors to refine and advance the Institute's brand strategy and messaging framework.
  • Lead strategic efforts to identify and engage previously untapped audiences, utilizing data-driven insights and innovative methodologies.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to design and implement amplification campaigns, donor engagement strategies, and public events by engaging external partners and consultants.
  • Coordinate and promote high-profile public relations events and manage the editorial calendar for timely execution of all communication activities.
  • Ensure effective collaboration between communications and other departments, providing necessary support for priority projects and campaigns.
  • Work with leadership to foster positive internal communications that keep all staff informed and promote a collaborative environment.
  • Dedicate 25% of this role to the Design for Transformation program, delivering a comprehensive global narrative and storytelling initiative in partnership with external agencies, global partners, and funders.
Public Relations:
  • Advocate for the Institute's brand, ensuring a robust and consistent presence both internally and externally.
  • Oversee the Institute's social media strategy, focusing on audience growth and engagement, while enhancing distribution channels and media relationships.
  • Lead media relations initiatives, acting as the primary contact for media inquiries and managing publicity efforts.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage a comprehensive inventory of internal and external communication tools and platforms across the organization.
Management:
  • Develop and oversee a communications budget, including forecasting needs; coordinate creative services for communication materials; recruit and support contractors, managing work plans, providing feedback, and leading meetings.
  • Supervise the production of key communication assets, including annual reports, development materials, digital content, and media resources.
  • Manage direct reports by participating in the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new communications personnel.
  • Seek opportunities to streamline communication operations and enhance team efficiency.
  • Set clear job expectations and communicate effectively.
  • Regularly assess performance, culminating in an annual written evaluation.
  • Lead, mentor, and support the professional development of the team.
  • Create Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for independent contractor services.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and over 10 years of combined experience in communications, marketing, and/or public relations.
  • Experience in brand management, media relations, and digital promotion of mission-driven programs is advantageous.
  • Proficient in synthesizing and disseminating information through various distribution channels.
  • Strong understanding of the social media landscape, with a focus on community engagement and activation.
  • Familiarity with biomimicry is essential; if not trained, completion of advanced training is required.
