Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Youth Development Specialist to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people by providing social emotional learning and prevention programs.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality social and emotional learning programs to students from low-income communities. They will lead or co-lead prevention education classes, teach trauma-informed curriculum to students with potentially traumatic experiences, and engage students in learning using various instructional strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver social emotional learning programs tailored to the needs of students from low-income communities.
  • Lead or co-lead prevention education classes to promote healthy behaviors and decision-making skills.
  • Teach trauma-informed curriculum to students who have experienced adverse childhood events.
  • Collaborate with schools, community organizations, and social services agencies to provide comprehensive support to students.
  • Network with other prevention agencies to disseminate effective social emotional learning programs.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit reports as required by the school.
  • Pursue continuing education and training to enhance professional development.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience in teaching and working with youth in a school or community setting.
  • Ability to work effectively in multicultural environments and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences.
  • Strong understanding of developmental needs of youth and ability to provide relevant teaching experiences.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
