Position Overview

The Community Outreach Specialist plays a vital role within the Marketing and Member Services division. This position focuses on enhancing the reputation of East End Cooperative Inc as both a natural foods retailer and a community hub. Candidates should possess a friendly demeanor and a professional attitude, with a strong inclination towards teamwork and collaboration. Proficiency in community engagement, event coordination, social media oversight, and public speaking is crucial. Familiarity with local food systems, urban farming, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices, as well as non-profit and cooperative business frameworks, is highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

I. General Duties

  • Adhere to the Core Values as outlined in the organization's mission statement.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service to both patrons and colleagues.
  • Effectively communicate the organization's mission and membership process.
  • Maintain knowledge of store layout, offerings, and services.
  • Understand and follow emergency protocols.
  • Stay informed about current communications, policies, and updates.
  • Comply with organizational policies as specified in the Employee Handbook.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to evolving job requirements.

II. Community Relations

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the organization's history, objectives, and priorities.
  • Provide clear and engaging verbal communication to the public regarding membership benefits and community value.
  • Identify and coordinate community outreach programs and initiatives.
  • Facilitate the organization's involvement and representation at community events, including educational series.
  • Offer logistical support during events, including setup and breakdown of venues.
  • Track and document metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of events.
  • Request supplies and maintain accurate expense records as necessary.
  • Keep thorough records of contracts, permits, and related documentation.
  • Support member initiatives such as recruitment and orientation efforts.
  • Enhance and sustain the Community Partners Program.
  • Develop programming that showcases local vendors and promotes supplier diversity.

III. Communications

  • Assist in generating content for the organization's social media platforms.
  • Monitor social media engagement and performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Member Services Manager to ensure alignment with promotional strategies.
  • Work with various departments to create accurate and engaging content for social media.
  • Help produce and distribute promotional materials, including newsletters.
  • Consult with the Marketing and Member Services Manager on sensitive communications.
  • Support administrative tasks related to promotions and advertising as directed.
  • Contribute to the creation of in-store signage and promotional literature.
  • Share responsibility for the maintenance and safety of promotional equipment.
  • Undertake additional tasks and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Knowledge of natural foods, cooperatives, and relevant topics such as environmental sustainability and nutrition.

  • Friendly and approachable, with a proactive approach to engaging diverse individuals.
  • Proficient in using standard technology, including presentation tools.
  • Sound decision-making skills with the ability to think quickly and adapt to situations.
  • Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment, which may involve various weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation for work-related tasks.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to stand or sit for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Experience in event planning and coordination.
