Job Overview

The Regional Operations Manager for Bridge Projects will play a vital role in achieving operational excellence by supporting the Regional Practice Leader and collaborating closely with department heads and engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle. This position emphasizes not only the management and leadership of significant projects but also encompasses regional resource distribution, technical planning assistance, oversight of project management performance, quality assurance, and financial accountability for bridge and multidisciplinary projects. The role demands exceptional technical and communication abilities to engage effectively with Michael Baker International personnel, ensuring that all work is executed with the utmost technical and operational standards. The Regional Operations Manager will closely collaborate with the Regional Bridge Practice Leader to prioritize tasks and foster a culture of collaborative excellence across all bridge services offered by Michael Baker.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work alongside the Department Manager and Regional Bridge Practice Lead, as well as structural engineering managers, to serve in various capacities such as Program Manager, Project Manager, Technical Manager, or Technical Advisor for local and regional initiatives.
  • Engage in regional business development efforts, including client outreach, identifying future partnership opportunities, proposal drafting or evaluation, project interviews, and scoping.
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of essential personnel.
  • Establish and nurture effective relationships across Michael Baker offices and external organizations to promote collaboration and resource sharing.
  • Collaborate with department managers to allocate technical resources for project staffing.
  • Evaluate the regional bridge practice backlog and maintain a forecast of staffing requirements.
  • Conduct workforce analysis and resource management to assess skills, experience, competencies, and training needs.
  • Oversee QA/QC procedures and client quality requirements in coordination with the quality assurance team.
  • Contribute to the upkeep of Quality Control Manuals for use across the organization and assist in conducting periodic Discipline Quality Control Audits.
  • Act as a Project Manager on Bridge/Structural Engineering Projects throughout the region.
  • Lead proposal initiatives by leveraging existing client relationships to enhance departmental growth.
  • Support the Department Manager in managing staff utilization through scheduling, monitoring, and adjusting assignments; creating and overseeing departmental budgets; and providing leadership through mentoring and motivation on performance, financial management, and client relations.
Professional Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required; a Master's degree in Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • At least 20 years of experience in bridge design, including a minimum of 10 years in project management, is essential. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience with relevant state departments and managing complex bridge rehabilitation or replacement projects.
  • A valid Professional Engineering License in New York is mandatory.
  • Previous experience as a Project Manager on state DOT Bridge Design Projects is required; experience with design-build projects is a plus.
  • Ability to qualify as a Project Manager and manage projects for clients within the designated market.
  • Capability to qualify as a Design Manager and/or Lead Structural Engineer on Design Build Projects.
  • Proficiency in QC Oversight responsibilities, including understanding technical design and constructability requirements.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, both internally and externally.
  • Able to leverage existing connections and client relationships to identify and secure new bridge projects.
  • Ability to effectively network and influence peers.
  • Familiarity with resource and financial management platforms.
  • A strong commitment to high-quality engineering services and client deliverables.

Compensation

The estimated compensation range for this role is between $185,000 and $230,000. This range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will depend on various factors, including education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and work location.
