Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Research Scientist to join the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. This role involves exploring the immune and tissue responses of the lungs to various exposures, both infectious and non-infectious, including conditions such as COPD, ILD, lung transplant, and ARDS/ALI. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Dr. Y. Michael Shim on two newly funded NIH R01 projects.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct advanced experimental research focusing on immune regulation related to lung injury and chronic disease development.
- Utilize innovative mouse models, adoptive transfer studies, gene expression analysis, and advanced cytometry techniques.
- Engage in the collection and analysis of biospecimens from human subjects, including plasma, PBMCs, and lung samples.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including graduate students, technicians, and clinical fellows.
- Participate in laboratory meetings, research seminars, and contribute to writing study reports, academic papers, and grant applications.

Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Immunology, Virology, Lung Biology, or a related discipline is required.
- Proven experience in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, and molecular biology techniques.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective time management abilities.
- A track record of grant writing and research publication is preferred.

Additional Information:
This position is designed for individuals who have recently completed their doctoral studies, typically within the last five years. The appointment is for a 12-month term, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
