Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician

Covenant Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our team in East Tennessee. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing waived or non-waived clinical lab tests.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine and waived or non-waived tests as trained and competent in performing.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Document corrective actions taken when the test process deviates from established performance specifications.
  • Perform proficiency-testing and maintain records demonstrating proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality control policies and document all control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the laboratory medical director if the problem cannot be resolved.
  • Perform orientation, instruction, and evaluation of new employees to the department.
  • Prepare various reagents and supplies according to precise formulas as needed.
  • Utilize Versyss, Lab Corp, and Quest Information Systems in patient accessioning and resulting.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments as specified.
  • Perform blood collection procedures according to stated procedure in manual.
  • Plan work to ensure maximum productivity with minimum amount of 'carry over' work while keeping overtime to a minimum.
  • Act as a resource person for phlebotomy if trained appropriately.
  • Maintain and disinfect work area.
  • Participate in inservices.
  • Handle biohazard wastes according to policy.
  • Assist in evaluation and validation of testing systems.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient, co-worker, and business information at all times.
  • Use proper judgment in releasing information and analyze situations and take appropriate actions.
  • Use fundamentals of AIDET when interacting and communicating with patients.
  • Adhere to Covenant Health policies on Integrity and Compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with the patient, physician, and other care team members as part of a team-based approach to overall patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum Education: None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.
  • Minimum Experience: Must possess basic computer skills and medical terminology. Must have knowledge of the Versyss, Lab Corp, and Quest Information System. Prefer at least three (3) years experience in Waived and Non-waived testing.
  • Licensure requirement: Current Tennessee State License as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred.
