Company Overview

The City and County of San Francisco is responsible for overseeing various transportation services, including public transit, cycling, parking, and traffic management.

The Transit Division is actively engaged in the development of a new Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. Within the Transit Program Delivery unit, the Transit Technology Group is tasked with managing essential technology systems that support transit operations.

The Train Control Upgrade Project is focused on modernizing the existing Automatic Train Control System in the subway network with a state-of-the-art CBTC system. This initiative involves collaboration with multiple firms for installation, construction assistance, technical expertise, and professional services.

Position Summary

APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt - Full Time not to exceed three (3) years

Salary: $142,220 to $172,874 annually

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30AM-5:30PM

Under the guidance of the Train Control Upgrade Engineering Manager and Project Lead Engineer, the Junior Engineer will engage in system engineering tasks related to the Train Control Upgrade Project. Key responsibilities encompass:

  • Providing engineering assistance for the implementation of CBTC technology.
  • Contributing to the formulation of functional requirements for the new CBTC system.
  • Evaluating submissions from contractors during design assessments.
  • Collaborating on integration strategies between the CBTC system and other operational systems.
  • Monitoring the performance of the train control system to ensure adherence to specifications.
  • Conducting field inspections and visits for various components of the train control system.
  • Potentially supervising junior engineering personnel.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

A minimum of three years of professional engineering experience and possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in California.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical proficiency in train control and signaling systems.
  • Experience with railway wayside equipment and systems.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience in project settings.
  • Familiarity with computer systems and networking.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with diverse groups and stakeholders.
