Job Title: History and Architecture Consultant

EMH&T is seeking a highly skilled History and Architecture Consultant to join our team. As a key member of our cultural resource practice, you will work closely with our environmental and cultural resources staff to support our clients' needs.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for completing all levels of history/architecture surveys and related documents, assisting and advising project managers, and developing and maintaining agency and client relationships. This is a full-time or part-time position that can be worked from our office in Columbus, Ohio.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of surveys with the help of EMH&T's project managers.
  • Coordinate with clients and government agencies, such as the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office and other SHPOs.
  • Train/mentor junior staff in field investigations and technical write-ups.
  • Analyze assessment findings, develop recommendations, and prepare historic structures reports, conservation plans, condition assessments, and related documents for client and agency review.
  • Serve as lead author and reviewer of H/A surveys and reports, ensuring technical accuracy and quality of work products.
  • Advise and consult with project managers to ensure project compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and associated federal and state regulations.
  • Frequent travel and work outdoors for extended periods under all weather conditions, sometimes in rugged terrain and conditions.
  • Help promote and maintain a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
  • Communicate efficiently, both verbally and in written form.
Requirements
  • Graduate degree (MA/MS or Ph.D.) in American architectural history, anthropology, architectural preservation, preservation planning, architecture, or closely related field.
  • Meet the Secretary of Interior's Professional Qualifications for History, Architectural History, Architecture, Historic Architecture, or Historic Preservation Planning.
  • Experience and ability to complete H/A surveys for a variety of clients and sectors.
  • Strong working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106, Section 110), National Environmental Policy Act, and associated federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Minimum of five years demonstrated, full-time experience as a preservation architect/historian conducting historic research, preparing surveys, and writing reports for architectural preservation, historic structures, and facility analyses.
  • Must be a strong technical writer with a minimum of five years of experience as a lead author on H/A surveys.
  • Knowledge of preservation, historic construction, and restoration techniques and policies.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and respond quickly while working in the field or office.
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously, including coordinating with clients, budget tracking, supervising staff, and overseeing field work and report writing.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize work to meet fast-paced deadlines.
  • Must be attentive to organization, detail, and accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with engineers, environmental scientists, cultural resources professionals, and archaeologists, and other technical specialists as part of a large, multi-disciplinary project team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ODOT Prequalification in History/Architectural Investigations
  • Qualified on the Ohio SHPO History/Architecture Consultants List
  • Professional accreditation, e.g., Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA)
Physical Requirements
  • Use of electronic standard desktop and portable office equipment.
  • The ability to tolerate outdoor weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor insects, poisonous plants, and allergens for extended periods of time (8-10 hours per day throughout the year).
  • The ability to walk for extended periods of time and the ability to maneuver over rough terrain, ditches, steep banks, and uneven ground.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. of equipment/materials while walking across terrain.
  • Intermittent squatting, leaning, twisting, and bending.
  • Use of hand equipment or tools.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background and drug screen.
