POSITION SUMMARY:


The primary purpose of this role is to uphold Federal, State, and local laws while responding to calls for the safeguarding of life and property.

Under general supervision, the officer will engage in law enforcement and crime prevention activities; manage traffic flow and enforce traffic regulations; and perform related duties as necessary.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a journey-level position within the professional police series requiring sworn peace officer status. This role is distinct from Police Sergeant and Police Corporal, which provide general oversight for Police Officers.

SUPERVISION:
General supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant.

Technical or functional oversight may be provided by higher-level police personnel; assignments may necessitate direct or indirect supervision of sworn and non-sworn staff.


CORE DUTIES:
Conduct patrols in designated areas using a police vehicle, motorcycle, or on foot
Enforce local, State, and Federal laws
Respond to calls concerning the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other emergencies
Inspect business and residential areas to deter criminal activity
Address calls for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of municipal, county, and state laws as assigned
Carry out preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, criminal incidents, hazardous situations, accidents, and other significant occurrences

Make arrests; interrogate suspects and interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; coordinate and conduct thorough investigations of violent crimes, child abuse, property crimes, vice, gaming, narcotics violations, and other offenses; testify and present evidence in court; provide backup support for other officers and personnel; collect, preserve, and maintain evidence, found property, and property for safekeeping; assist and advise motorists while enforcing traffic safety laws by issuing citations and warnings; search, fingerprint, transport, and book detainees; respond to demonstrations, riots, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, and other highly dangerous scenarios; maintain public contact regarding potential law enforcement issues and foster positive relationships with the community; serve warrants and subpoenas; observe, monitor, direct, and manage routine and unusual traffic conditions; check buildings for security; and administer first aid and CPR as necessary; attend fire scenes to aid in the protection of life and property.

Prepare reports of arrests made, investigations conducted, and unusual incidents observed
Operate electronic and emergency communication devices and equipment in the field, in patrol vehicles, or in the office
Provide information and directions to the public
Perform duties as a Designated Disaster Service Worker in compliance with California Government Code, as needed, during natural and manmade disasters and emergencies
Carry out other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Ability to read and comprehend departmental policies, instructions, laws, and regulations; ability to analyze situations and adopt a swift, effective, and reasonable course of action; ability to prepare clear and accurate reports; physical agility; keen observation and ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to learn the use and care of automobiles, other police vehicles, firearms, and other specialized police equipment; ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing; observe accurately and remember faces, numbers, incidents, and locations; demonstrate proficiency in the use and care of firearms; think and act quickly in emergencies, and assess situations and individuals accurately; maintain a professional demeanor during stressful circumstances; learn, understand, and interpret laws, rules, regulations, and policies; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports; learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system; demonstrate proficiency in defensive tactics; handle an automobile in high-speed and emergency situations; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those encountered in the course of work; understand and execute oral and written instructions; uphold the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics at all times.


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical pathway to acquire the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience - Any full or part-time employment experience sufficient to demonstrate good work habits; Education - High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Sixty (60) college semester units in Police Sciences or a closely related field is preferred.

AGE AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Minimum age of 21 years; weight in proportion to height; normal visual functions and visual acuity of no less than 20/40 in each eye without corrections, and corrected to 20/20 in the better eye, and no less than 20/30 in the lesser eye.

Must be free from color and night blindness and possess normal hearing.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:
This position requires the use of a department vehicle while on duty and conducting law enforcement activities.

Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess a valid California motor vehicle operator's license upon hire and maintain it throughout employment.
