MAJOR FUNCTION: The Aquatic Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of patrons at county-operated aquatic facilities.

Essential Job Functions

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Knowledge:
  • Understanding of water safety protocols and standard lifeguard responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with approved rescue techniques and first aid practices.
  • Proficient swimming and safety capabilities.
Abilities and Skills:
  • Ability to maintain the cleanliness and safety of aquatic areas and associated equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective relationships with the public and team members.
  • Capacity to learn and adhere to facility regulations.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Aquatic Safety Officer Duties:
  • Execute emergency rescue procedures; provide first aid, CPR, AED, or oxygen as necessary.
  • Oversee the safety and cleanliness of aquatic amenities, including pool areas, restrooms, and showers.
  • Engage with the public and address their needs effectively.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Responsibilities:
  • Perform lifeguard duties while also conducting water safety training, swimming lessons, and health-related aquatic classes.
  • Deliver water safety education to the community, highlighting health benefits and safety practices. Regularly prepare and submit reports.
  • Assist in training and supervising assigned personnel.
  • Work may be on a full-time or part-time basis.
  • Must be available for flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
WSIs must possess: Comprehensive knowledge of water safety instruction, lifeguard techniques, and aquatic facility maintenance.

Ability to instruct swimming lessons and fulfill lifeguard responsibilities.

Basic computer skills for email and data entry tasks.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Good hand/eye coordination, vision, and hearing (with or without correction). Frequent light lifting (30 lbs. or less) and occasional heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs.), reaching, kneeling, bending, and squatting. Continuous walking and standing in an outdoor environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Work consistently outdoors under varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, and rain.

WORK HAZARDS: Exposure to chemicals such as soda ash, chlorine, and muriatic acid for pool maintenance. Risk of exposure to UV rays (sunscreen provided).

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED: Lifesaving equipment including ring buoy, shepherd's crook, whistle, trauma bag (first aid kit, AED, oxygen cylinder, gloves, biohazard bags, etc.), rescue tube, backboard, and handicap lift.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.

EXPERIENCE, LICENSE, AND CERTIFICATIONS: A valid driver's license is required, and a good driving record must be maintained. If lacking a driver's license, a signed agreement regarding vehicle usage during employment is necessary.

Pay Grade is by Tier:

Starting Rate (No Certification): $15.90 Per Hour

No prior lifeguard certification or experience is necessary.

Selected candidates must pass a swim test, which includes various swimming tasks.

Candidates must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent and Advanced First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment.
  • After ARC Lifeguard Certification: $16.38/hour, American Red Cross Shallow Up to 6' Lifeguard Certification.
  • Employee Eligible for: 2% for every certification associated with the position, such as Water Safety Instructor, and 3% for each returning season up to 5 consecutive seasons without changing positions.
