Chief Executive Officer of the Roosevelt Institute
2 months ago
The Roosevelt Institute serves as a think tank dedicated to promoting concepts that redistribute power within our economy and democracy, while also investing in leaders and specialists to foster a more equitable, high-care, and low-carbon future. Through initiatives like the Roosevelt Society and Roosevelt Network, we provide an intellectual and policy-oriented environment for intergenerational professionals and students committed to realizing this shared vision. As the nonprofit partner to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, we integrate the legacy and teachings of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt into all our endeavors.
Our organization tackles today's most pressing challenges by advocating for innovative, transformative research and policy proposals. We believe in the potential for a more productive and inventive American economy by revitalizing democratic institutions and rethinking the role of public authority in shaping the economy we require.
Roosevelt is committed to constructing and nurturing a robust counterforce to the prevailing neoliberal policies of the past fifty years, advocating for an economically inclusive, pro-growth, and democratic perspective. We elevate groundbreaking, meticulously researched, and clearly articulated ideas, creating a progressive pipeline into federal service and supporting individuals ready to implement these concepts.
Our work, along with that of our advocacy affiliate, Roosevelt Forward, has significantly impacted current federal legislative and administrative priorities. We have successfully translated many of our ideas into action, particularly through the agenda of the current administration, which emphasizes high-care, low-carbon, and pro-worker economic and social policies aimed at transforming the economic landscape.
The Roosevelt Institute is in search of a new Chief Executive Officer to guide the next phase of our mission.
Over the last decade, Roosevelt has more than doubled its operational budget, now functioning as a $15 million annual organization with a dedicated team of 70 staff members and $38 million in assets under management. Our executive team is robust, as is our staff union.
We stand at a pivotal and transformative juncture that presents an opportunity to effect meaningful change in the political and economic paradigm. Our nation is confronted with both crises and opportunities, reminiscent of the era of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Our current challenge is ambitious yet attainable: to continue fostering innovative, compelling ideas and to inspire and sustain the next generation of leaders to reinvigorate progressive thought and collaboratively build a more equitable society.
Key Responsibilities
As the Chief Executive Officer, you will report to and collaborate closely with the Board of Directors, overseeing the strategic, programmatic, financial, and operational leadership of the Roosevelt Institute. The CEO will be instrumental in executing a strategy that accomplishes three primary objectives:
- Transforming paradigms, altering perceptions of what is achievable in the economy;
- Fostering an intergenerational pipeline of individuals eager to contribute to the public good in policy roles; and
- Building a network of changemakers through collaborations and partnerships across academia, the nonprofit sector, philanthropy, and government.
Strategic Leadership
The CEO will work with the Board of Directors, the Executive Team, and other stakeholders to comprehend and anticipate the current political landscape, developing shared objectives for impact. Success at Roosevelt hinges on the ability to foresee future needs and establish a framework for a thriving, inclusive economy. Championing and further developing this vision is a critical aspect of the role.
Operational Oversight
The most valuable asset of Roosevelt is its talented and dedicated staff, along with its extensive network of fellows, students, and alumni. The CEO will provide leadership and direction to all team members, which includes formulating annual plans, setting ambitious goals, and ensuring accountability. Responsibilities also encompass recruiting and retaining top talent, fostering effective internal communication, mentoring staff, and maintaining exemplary financial practices.
Fundraising and External Relations
The CEO will serve as the public representative of the organization and the primary fundraiser, collaborating with a skilled development team to identify, cultivate, and maintain donor relationships. The organization anticipates raising and spending approximately $15 million annually, with a significant portion sourced from institutional foundations. Strengthening diverse philanthropic contributions will be essential for the ongoing success of Roosevelt.
The CEO will also enhance the visibility of Roosevelt through public speaking engagements, interactions with elected officials, media appearances, and written contributions. Success in external relations will be achieved through both personal engagement and by empowering other team members as ambassadors for the organization.
Governance
The CEO will collaborate closely with the Board Chair and key committee leaders to ensure effective governance of the Roosevelt Institute. This includes developing long-term strategic plans, overseeing financial and budgetary compliance, and managing staff-related matters.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a charismatic and visionary leadership style, with a proven ability to engage diverse stakeholders in the organization's mission. A commitment to nurturing progressive leaders and ideas at all professional levels is essential. The candidate should demonstrate the capacity to identify and prioritize opportunities, understand trade-offs, and pursue strategic partnerships.
As the primary spokesperson for the Roosevelt Institute, the candidate must exhibit executive presence and the ability to represent the organization effectively across various sectors. Strong communication skills and the ability to connect with a wide range of individuals, from students to seasoned professionals, are crucial.
Additionally, the candidate should have a deep understanding of the political economy landscape, with a track record of delivering impactful policy and partnership results. Experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, and governance is highly desirable.
At Roosevelt, we value a diverse workplace culture and are committed to providing opportunities for career growth and development. We encourage individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences to apply.
