The Radiology Registered Nurse operates within the professional parameters set by the Board of Nursing, focusing on the evaluation, planning, care, and treatment of patients undergoing radiological assessments and procedures. This role involves identifying patient risks and contraindications, as well as monitoring patient conditions to recognize any changes that may necessitate medical intervention, while also observing for unexpected patient reactions.

This position is classified as a Safety Sensitive Position. The essential duties, physical requirements, and mental competencies associated with this role necessitate that the employee remains in a constant state of alertness to ensure safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitates communication among clinics, healthcare providers, front office personnel, and the imaging department.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in IV placement and injection techniques.
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify patient risks and contraindications for specific imaging procedures.
  • Observes patient status during procedures to identify any changes that may require medical attention.
  • Adjusts and positions patients to alleviate pain, ensure comfort, and optimize image quality.
  • Educates patients and their families on post-procedure care and discharge instructions.
  • Responds to emergencies and adverse events following procedures.
  • Collaborates with the pre-certification team on procedures to ensure patient care capabilities at the facility.
  • Provides direct patient care, coordinating with physicians, staff, and ancillary services as necessary.
  • Initiates intravenous catheters and infusion ports, administers medications, monitors vital signs, and assists patients with personal needs.
  • Conducts patient education for new patients regarding their condition, treatment options, and available support services.
  • Manages telephone triage, addresses patient concerns, consults with physicians, and takes appropriate actions.
  • Communicates the patient's medical status to the Radiologist to determine suitability for radiologic procedures.
  • Performs tasks such as administering IV fluids, monitoring vital signs, and utilizing cardiac/pulse oximeters.
  • Transports patients to and from procedures as needed.
  • Maintains accurate patient records and documents nursing actions and responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
  • Hold a valid Arkansas RN license.
  • Complete the required continuing education units (CEUs) as mandated by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required or must be obtained upon hire.
  • Achieve Certified Radiology Nurse Exam certification within one year of employment.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience in direct patient care.
  • Preferred experience in intensive care, PACU, or emergency department settings.
  • Proficient in computer skills and basic office equipment.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Capable of solving practical problems and managing various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret a range of instructions provided in written, oral, or scheduled formats.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Must effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Required to interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel while maintaining patient confidentiality.
