JOB OBJECTIVE: Support the Chief Architect of the Historic Sites Division in executing moderate to complex architectural projects. Responsibilities include the development and management of preservation, rehabilitation, new construction, and maintenance initiatives across various locations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Collaborate with the Chief Architect to contract and supervise the creation of architectural plans and specifications aimed at the repair and restoration of historic sites, ensuring adherence to established architectural standards and preservation practices.

Oversee coordination with the Division of Architecture and the Archeology Division.

Facilitate collaboration with the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Texas Department of Transportation.

Conduct inspections of existing structures and formulate detailed scopes of work along with cost estimates.

Prepare conceptual designs, feasibility assessments, and construction documents utilizing AutoCAD, Revit, and/or SketchUp software.

Review and manage the contributions of contracted architects, engineers, and other consultants.

Execute Construction Contract Administration responsibilities during the construction phase of projects.

Maintain and catalog project record documents.

Perform inspections to ensure compliance with relevant laws and specifications.

Monitor building conditions and cyclical maintenance tasks.

Collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction contractors to uphold warranty obligations and coordinate necessary corrective actions.

Provide technical guidance and architectural consultation to field personnel at historic sites.

Engage in planning for collections care, interpretation, and educational initiatives as required.

Assist in the creation of RFQs and RFPs for Level 2 and Level 3 projects.

Authorize all construction payment applications for Level 2 projects.

Participate in substantial and final completion meetings for Level 3 construction projects.

Support the development of solicitation documents and oversee the bidding and contracting processes.

Act as the backup to the Chief Architect of Historic Sites.

Maintain a consistent work schedule with regular attendance.

Adhere to established safety protocols and ethical standards.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform additional tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a degree in Architecture or a related discipline.

A minimum of seven years of professional experience in an architectural office environment, specifically in preparing construction documents and/or managing construction contracts.

Proficiency in AutoCAD or Revit for producing construction documents.

Strong skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Experience in overseeing project workflows and staff management.

A valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Willingness to travel up to 20% of the work period.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A Master's degree in Architecture with a focus on Historic Preservation or Architectural History.

Experience with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Ability to utilize SketchUp for 3D renderings.

Proficiency in Revit.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive understanding of architectural principles, techniques, and procedures.

Familiarity with contemporary and historic building materials and construction methods.

Knowledge of building and life safety codes, particularly concerning historic properties.

Awareness of Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) standards and practices.

Exceptional customer service skills for both internal and external stakeholders.

Ability to prepare construction cost estimates and budget documents using Microsoft Excel.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with effective human relations and organizational abilities.

Critical thinking skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.

Capability to adapt to changes and deliver quality results in a timely manner.

Ability to plan, organize, and work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Competence in training others and exercising sound judgment and discretion.

Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE:

Must possess or obtain a valid driver's license and complete a Defensive Driving Course to operate state vehicles.

Must be registered as an Architect by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.

Must achieve Certified Texas Contract Manager Certification (CTCM) within one year of employment.

ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

This position is primarily office-based but includes evaluations of historic structures, which may require accessing attics, crawlspaces, and other confined spaces. Duties may involve climbing ladders, using boom lifts, and walking on roofs. The role may require working outdoors in varying weather conditions and visiting active construction sites where noise, dust, and uneven surfaces are present. The position is mostly sedentary but may involve physical activities such as walking, standing, and lifting items up to 30 pounds. Travel is required, including overnight stays, and attendance at conferences and meetings may necessitate evening and weekend work hours.
