Are you ready to make a difference in your career? CUPP 5 South is an expanding Orthopedic/Surgical unit that plays a crucial role within PPMC.

This unit serves as the primary location for post-operative surgical patients, encompassing a wide range of specialties including General, Orthopedic, Abdominal & Bariatric, Total Joint Replacement, Spinal, Neurosurgery, Trauma, GYN, Oral, Vascular, Urological, Podiatry, Colorectal, ENT, and trauma and neuro overflow.


Position Overview:


The Patient Care Assistant is a vital member of the healthcare team, providing high-quality care through effective collaboration and communication with colleagues.

Working under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, they assist in delivering quality care to patients and their families.

Key responsibilities include the collection and reporting of patient data, upholding organizational standards for superior care, and taking accountability for their performance outcomes while supporting PPMC's Standards of Excellence.

The role requires demonstrating the Penn Medicine Behavioral Competencies in all interactions with patients, families, and team members.Responsibilities:

Report: Receives detailed verbal or written reports at the start of each shift from the registered nurse (RN) regarding the care to be provided to assigned patients, including those requiring constant observation.

Provides a report upon leaving the unit and at the end of the shift regarding the care delivered; any irregularities during the shift must be reported immediately to the RN and the incoming Patient Care Assistant.

Assists in Assessment:

Identifies patients in accordance with hospital policy before performing any tasks.

Assists in gathering data for nursing assessments, such as vital signs, height, weight, blood sugar levels, and functional status, and communicates any changes to the RN promptly.
Engages in respectful communication with patients, families, and coworkers.
Provides relevant patient and family information to the registered nurse for care coordination and discharge planning.
Monitors skin conditions and reports any discoloration, abrasions, infestations, or breakdowns.Planning:

Assists in establishing realistic and mutually agreed-upon individual patient goals.



Integrates RN's directions:
into the care provided to the patient.

Reports to the RN before the end of the shift regarding the patient's response to the care plan and any unusual findings such as abnormal vital signs or pain.

Intervention:

Promotes infection control by adhering to proper hand hygiene practices.


Follows standard precautions and any isolation protocols as dictated by the patient's condition.

Ensures a safe environment and protects patients from potential injuries by monitoring those at risk for falls, confusion, disorientation, or suicidal behaviors; adheres to the Constant Observation Policy.

Applies and monitors patients in restraints as per policy and medical orders.

Observes and records vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight, and fluid intake/output.

Communicates significant observations to the healthcare team in a timely manner.

Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and unit meetings.

Collaborates with all healthcare team members and reports any findings that may affect patient care.

Assists patients with daily living activities such as bathing, grooming, eating, and mobility.

Participates in preventing skin breakdown through regular repositioning.

Administers heat and cold therapy as directed by the nurse.

Ensures the patient's dietary needs are met, including any special requirements.

Facilitates elimination needs and assists with colostomy and vaginal irrigations as needed.

Supports physicians during physical examinations and assists with oxygen therapy as directed.

Encourages patients to engage in pulmonary exercises.

Utilizes appropriate equipment for patient lifting and reinforces health education as instructed by the RN.



Qualifications:
Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required): CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is mandatory.

Certified Nursing Assistant (Required): Must hold certification from the state of Pennsylvania as a certified nursing assistant or be a nursing student enrolled in an accredited ASN program, having completed the nursing fundamentals clinical course with a minimum 3.0 GPA.


Education or Equivalent Experience:
High School Diploma/GED (Required): Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Other (Required): Completion of a certified nursing assistant program or, if not certified, must be a nursing student enrolled in an accredited ASN program, maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA in nursing courses.

Nursing students must maintain active enrollment and fulfill all course requirements.

Failure to meet academic standards will result in termination of the nursing assistant position.
