Position Title: Patient Care Assistant
Department: Oncology Services
Location: Advanced Medical Center
Entity: Healthcare Provider Unit
Schedule: Monday to Friday, as per departmental requirements
Overview:
- The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) supports the practice manager and medical staff in fostering a patient-centered environment, enhances the delivery of superior care, and is dedicated to achieving high levels of patient satisfaction and operational efficiency. The PCA is responsible for patient care through various tasks including preparation, communication, and assistance with daily living activities.
- Patient Care Duties: Efficiently prepares patients for consultations, utilizing electronic medical records (EMR) to notify providers of patient readiness; reviews medical histories, allergies, and medications; initiates goal-setting for self-management when appropriate; measures and records vital signs; prepares documentation for patient visits; understands insurance protocols for lab work and referrals.
- Monitors patient conditions and promptly communicates any significant changes to the healthcare provider.
- Assists patients with daily living activities, including mobility, dressing, and preparation for examinations, remaining present in the examination room as needed.
- Handles specimen collection for testing, performs necessary laboratory tests, documents results in EMR, and ensures compliance with quality control standards.
- Conducts EKGs and other screening tests as ordered by the physician, ensuring accurate documentation of results in EMR.
- Assists in minor surgical procedures by preparing instruments, maintaining sterile environments, and supporting patient positioning.
- Acts as a witness for consent forms when required.
- Responds effectively to emergency situations.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the care and treatment of patients across various age groups, from infants to the elderly.
- Administrative Duties: Engages in proactive communication with patients via phone, coordinating care with specialists and other healthcare services.
- Collects and organizes necessary documentation for patient visits, including test results and referrals.
- Completes medical forms and responds to clinical information requests as needed.
- Prepares and dispatches patient correspondence as required.
- Assists nursing staff in maintaining educational materials for patients.
- Safety and Compliance: Adheres to infection control protocols and safety standards.
- Properly disposes of hazardous waste and promotes hygiene through effective handwashing practices.
- Ensures patient care areas are clean, organized, and well-stocked.
- Disinfects and sterilizes medical instruments according to established protocols and reports any equipment malfunctions.
- Sets up and maintains medical equipment as per operational guidelines.
- Monitors patients for safety, particularly those at risk for falls or confusion.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures adherence to all relevant healthcare regulations and standards.
- Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to new processes and operational changes.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (Required).
- Certified Nursing Assistant certification (Required).
- High School Diploma or GED (Required).
- In lieu of certification, candidates must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and have completed foundational clinical courses with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and provide transcripts to nursing leadership each semester.
- Failure to meet academic requirements may result in termination of the assistant position.
- Graduates who obtain nursing licensure may continue in this role until transitioning to a nursing position.
