Position Overview:
This part-time role offers essential paraprofessional and customer service assistance across various departments of the City of Grand Rapids Public Library, with the primary aim of facilitating patron access to library resources.

Key Responsibilities:
The main focus of this position is direct public interaction, which includes aiding patrons in accessing library materials both in-person and through digital communication channels.

Responsibilities include:

  • Greeting visitors and addressing inquiries related to library services, while directing them to appropriate personnel.
  • Providing support to library users with account management, reference inquiries, reader's advisory, and technology assistance.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to enhance public service delivery.
  • Receiving training to assist at all public service desks and supporting various library departments as required.
  • Building meaningful relationships with families and fostering community among program participants.
  • Representing the library at community events and outreach initiatives.
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of programs and services.
  • Contributing to special projects, research, and documentation as needed.
  • Performing general administrative tasks, including cash handling and supply orders.
  • Collecting and reporting statistics related to library resources and activities.
  • Ensuring the upkeep and accessibility of the library's collection.
  • Managing patron expectations and ensuring a safe environment for all.
  • Assisting patrons with navigating technology resources, including digital tools and personal devices.
  • Upholding patron privacy in accordance with library policies and state regulations.

Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is required; a college degree is preferred. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in customer service, library settings, or related fields. Previous experience in a public library is advantageous. Proficiency in Spanish is also preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Deliver friendly and efficient service to library patrons.
  • Assist patrons with hardware and software issues related to library resources.
  • Conduct engaging storytimes for diverse groups.
  • Foster positive relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Maintain professionalism and composure in various situations.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Perform basic accounting tasks accurately.
  • Prioritize tasks and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Follow established procedures consistently.
  • Work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Maintain organized work processes and adapt to updates.
  • Prepare reports and maintain library records.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Understanding Required:
Candidates should possess knowledge of general office procedures and library methods, as well as an understanding of early childhood literacy and community resources.
