This part-time role offers paraprofessional and customer service assistance across various sections of the Grand Rapids Public Library, focusing on facilitating patron access to library resources.

The primary responsibility of this position is to deliver direct public service, aiding patrons in utilizing library resources through in-person interactions, phone calls, and email communications. The role operates under the general guidance of a librarian and may include overseeing the activities of other library staff and volunteers. Additional responsibilities encompass supporting librarians in collection enhancement, program development, and creating engaging displays.

This specific role emphasizes youth services, requiring candidates to possess a genuine enthusiasm for working with children, families, and adult caregivers. Applicants should enjoy public engagement, conducting storytime sessions, and leading programs and classes for youth of varying ages.

Work Schedule:

This position is regularly scheduled at the Madison Square Branch, with specific hours allocated for different weeks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Welcome visitors; address inquiries and provide general information related to library services, directing them to appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Assist library patrons with basic account management, reference inquiries, reader's advisory, technology assistance, and library information.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to enhance public service delivery.
  • Receive training to provide systematic support at all public service desks; may work in various library departments as required.
  • Build meaningful relationships with families and foster community among program participants.
  • Represent the library at community events and outreach initiatives.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of programs and services.
  • Support other staff with special projects, research, and idea generation; may involve writing, proofreading, or editing reports or documents as necessary.
  • Perform general administrative tasks in support of the location or department, which may include cash handling, supply orders, and equipment maintenance.
  • Collect, compile, and report statistics related to library resources and programs.
  • Ensure the maintenance, presentation, and accessibility of the library's collection.
  • Manage patron expectations and behavior in public spaces, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Assist patrons in navigating technology resources, including digital resources and personal devices.
  • Maintain patron privacy and adhere to library procedures and state laws.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; a college degree is preferred.
  • Two years of customer service experience, library experience, cash handling experience, office experience, or a combination thereof.
  • Previous experience in a public library setting is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish is preferred.
Other Necessary Skills:
  • Ability to provide friendly, accurate, and efficient service to patrons and staff; make independent decisions related to patron experience.
  • Assist patrons with hardware and software issues related to library resources.
  • Conduct storytimes for diverse groups.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with coworkers and the public; work collaboratively.
  • Manage emotions and maintain professionalism in the workplace.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform basic accounting calculations accurately.
  • Set and meet priorities; adapt as needed throughout shifts.
  • Follow standardized processes accurately and consistently.

  • Work 20-24 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.
