SALARY GRADE: $48,000/yearly
BONUS: $500 upon completion of the Child Welfare Academy

POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is responsible for providing both Intake and Ongoing social casework services to families experiencing or suspected of child abuse or neglect, as well as youth in conflict. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments, crisis intervention, mobilizing resources, and offering information and referrals related to child protection.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform intake assessments regarding allegations of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect; determine the necessity of placing children outside their home; oversee child placements and coordinate parent/child visitations; advise on the appropriate timing for returning children to their homes.
  • Evaluate service needs; provide crisis intake and develop care plans tailored to the children and families involved. Monitor client progress and adjust case plans as necessary.
  • Conduct monthly in-person visits with children and their guardians.
  • Facilitate Family Engagement meetings to discuss cases and formulate family service plans.
  • Establish connections with community resources, including law enforcement, behavioral health, and medical professionals, to gather additional information and coordinate services for optimal family support.
  • Participate in an On-Call rotation for after-hours coverage approximately one week per month.
  • Compile and present background information for court hearings, prepare court reports for judicial reviews, or summarize information for appropriate placements.
  • Attend court hearings and collaborate with attorneys, children, parents, witnesses, and other significant individuals regarding their roles.
  • Engage in staffing meetings with educational institutions, mental health providers, and other professionals involved in delivering services to families.
  • Act as a resource for information and referrals to the public.
  • Complete various ancillary tasks such as data entry, maintaining client records, and fulfilling required documentation and reports.
  • Make critical decisions regarding complex case situations in consultation with a supervisor. Develop proficiency in applying various casework techniques and methodologies.
  • Work is subject to regular review for adherence to procedures, methods, and accuracy through staffing and supervisory evaluations.
  • Work schedule is determined by the supervisor and program area.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as required.
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written) in English are essential.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of established theories, principles, and concepts of social casework practice related to child protection. Continuous professional development is required to apply advanced techniques and concepts.
  • Knowledge of child development, life stage development, attachment and bonding theories, and appropriate parenting practices.
  • Familiarity with human physical, emotional, psychological, and social development stages.
  • Understanding of legal documents and processes.
  • Awareness of applicable privacy laws, child protection issues, investigative procedures, and timelines, including Indian Child Welfare laws.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred but not mandatory.
Skills:
  • Comprehension of mediation and family engagement processes.
  • Experience in accessing community resources to assist clients.
  • Cultural competency regarding multi-cultural issues and differences.
  • Empathy and recognition of domestic/family violence, developmental disabilities, and mental health symptoms.
  • Intermediate computer skills to operate DHS-specific software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Negotiation skills to facilitate agreements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Social Work or a related human behavioral science field from an accredited institution is required.
  • One year of full-time professional social casework experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • A valid Colorado State Driver's License is required.
  • Completion of Child Welfare Caseworker Academy Training and certification within six months of hire, with maintenance of certification through 40 hours of annual training.
