POSITION SUMMARY:

The Detention Sergeant is responsible for overseeing staff and ensuring the safety and security of inmates within the Alamosa County Detention Facility during assigned shifts. This role involves assisting the Jail Administrator with various operational tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and comprehend Detention budgets effectively.
  • Order necessary supplies for the Detention unit.
  • Coordinate and delegate tasks among team members, while monitoring performance to uphold efficiency and quality.
  • Review and assign duties based on the work schedule.
  • Supervise the documentation of incidents within the facility, ensuring accuracy for legal and administrative purposes.
  • Examine daily reports, including bookings and transport logs.
  • Ensure completion of daily shift responsibilities.
  • Communicate and enforce policies and procedures, suggesting improvements as needed.
  • Oversee inmate welfare and monitor resources to ensure effective operations.
  • Maintain compliance with quality standards and regulations.
  • Secure all facility access points.
  • Train officers on shift regarding computer systems and inmate management.
  • Supervise the transportation of inmates to and from the detention center.
  • Coordinate inmate court dates and medical appointments with relevant personnel.
  • Account for all inmates at all times, preventing escapes and contraband introduction.
  • Document daily activities and review reports for completeness.
  • Monitor inmate behavior and enforce facility rules, initiating disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Prepare reports on operational issues and suggest service improvements.
  • Supervise work release programs and maintain records of inmate performance.
  • Ensure the proper handling of seized contraband.
  • Guarantee the safety of visitors, including legal representatives.
  • Provide information to inmates regarding facility regulations and procedures.
  • Conduct inventory of supplies and recommend necessary purchases.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Detention Lieutenant or Jail Administrator.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and readiness for work.
  • Exhibit the ability to work independently or collaboratively.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet the physical demands of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with daily paperwork and report preparation.
  • Understanding of policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Detention budget management.

Skills:

  • Ability to interpret safety rules and operational instructions.
  • Effective public speaking skills.

Abilities:

  • Competence in writing reports and correspondence.
  • Problem-solving skills in varied situations.
  • Ability to interpret diverse instructions.
  • Mathematical skills for basic calculations.

SUPERVISORY ROLE:

  • Direct supervision of employees in the Detention and Transport Divisions.
  • Responsibilities include hiring, training, and performance evaluation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of three years of experience with a Law Enforcement Agency or two years with Alamosa County Sheriff's Office.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Peace Officer and Detention Officer certifications are desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position requires standing, walking, and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. The employee must be capable of running and apprehending suspects when necessary. Exposure to various environmental conditions may occur.
