POSITION SUMMARY:

The Detention Operations Supervisor oversees staff and engages in the safeguarding, transport, and supervision of detainees within the Alamosa County Detention Facility during assigned shifts. This role assists the Jail Administrator with various responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze and comprehend Detention budgets.
  • Order necessary Detention supplies.
  • Coordinate and delegate tasks among team members, while assessing performance to ensure efficiency and quality.
  • Review and allocate duties according to the work schedule.
  • Supervise the documentation of incidents within the facility, including actions taken by officers for legal and administrative purposes.
  • Examine daily reports, including bookings, bonds, transport logs, and billing sheets.
  • Ensure completion of daily shift responsibilities.
  • Communicate and enforce policies, procedures, and standards within the unit, suggesting improvements as needed.
  • Oversee the welfare of inmates, managing time, personnel, equipment, and resources to maintain effective operations.
  • Guarantee compliance with quality standards and regulations.
  • Maintain security of all facility access points.
  • Train officers on shift regarding technology use, inmate management, and departmental protocols.
  • Supervise the transport of inmates to and from the detention center.
  • Coordinate court appearances and medical appointments for inmates in collaboration with relevant staff.
  • Ensure constant accountability of inmates, preventing escapes and the introduction of contraband.
  • Document daily activities using departmental protocols and review reports for accuracy.
  • Monitor inmate movement and behavior, enforcing rules and initiating disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Prepare reports on operational issues and suggest service improvements.
  • Manage work release activities, ensuring compliance and safety.
  • Safeguard the proper storage of seized contraband.
  • Ensure visitor safety, including legal representatives.
  • Address inmate inquiries regarding facility regulations and procedures.
  • Conduct inventory of supplies and recommend necessary purchases.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Detention Lieutenant or Jail Administrator.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and readiness for work.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the County and Sheriff's Office.
  • Meet the physical demands outlined in the job requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with daily documentation processes.
  • Ability to prepare incident reports.
  • Understanding of policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of Detention budget management.

Skills:

  • Ability to interpret safety rules and operational guidelines.
  • Effective public speaking skills.

Abilities:

  • Capable of writing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Problem-solving skills in varied situations.
  • Ability to interpret diverse instructions.
  • Proficient in basic arithmetic and data interpretation.

SUPERVISORY ROLE:

  • Direct supervision of employees in the Detention and Transport Divisions.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, and performance evaluation of staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of three years in a Law Enforcement role or two years with Alamosa County Sheriff's Office.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Peace Officer certification preferred.
  • Detention Officer certification preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position requires standing, walking, sitting, and the use of hands for various tasks. The employee must be able to lift and move items of varying weights and possess the physical ability to pursue and apprehend suspects if necessary. Exposure to various environmental conditions may occur.
