Compensation: Non-Post Certified: $49,566-$52,566 DOE; Post Certified: $53,506-$56,506 DOE
Position Summary:
The Detention Sergeant oversees personnel and engages in the safeguarding, transport, and supervision of inmates within the Alamosa County Detention Facility during assigned shifts. This role includes assisting the Jail Administrator with various responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and comprehend Detention budgets.
- Order necessary supplies for the Detention unit.
- Coordinate and delegate tasks among team members, assessing performance to ensure operational efficiency.
- Review and assign responsibilities according to the work schedule.
- Supervise the documentation of incidents within the facility, including the use of force by officers, to support legal proceedings and internal investigations.
- Examine daily reports such as bookings, bonds, and transport logs.
- Ensure completion of daily shift responsibilities.
- Communicate and enforce policies, procedures, and standards, suggesting improvements as needed.
- Oversee the welfare of inmates, monitoring resources to ensure effective organization and task completion.
- Guarantee compliance with quality standards and regulations.
- Maintain security of all facility access points.
- Train officers on shift regarding computer systems, inmate management, and departmental protocols.
- Supervise the transportation of inmates to and from the detention center.
- Coordinate court appearances and medical appointments for inmates.
- Ensure accountability of all inmates, preventing escapes and contraband introduction.
- Document daily activities and review reports for accuracy.
- Monitor inmate behavior for signs of conflict or distress, enforcing facility rules and initiating disciplinary actions when necessary.
- Prepare reports on operational issues and suggest service improvements.
- Supervise work release programs, maintaining control over inmates with work privileges.
- Ensure proper handling of seized contraband.
- Guarantee the safety of visitors, including legal representatives.
- Provide information to inmates regarding facility rules and procedures.
- Conduct inventory of supplies and recommend necessary purchases.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Detention Lieutenant or Jail Administrator.
- Maintain punctuality and readiness for work.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently or collaboratively.
- Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Adhere to County and Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.
- Meet the physical demands of the position.
Qualifications:
Knowledge:
- Familiarity with daily paperwork processes.
- Ability to prepare written reports.
- Understanding of policies, procedures, and standards.
- Knowledge of Detention budgeting.
Skills:
- Ability to interpret safety regulations and operational instructions.
- Effective public speaking skills.
Abilities:
- Capability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Problem-solving skills in diverse situations.
- Ability to interpret various forms of instructions.
- Mathematical skills for basic calculations.
Supervisory Duties:
- Direct supervision of employees in the Detention and Transport Divisions.
- Conducting interviews, hiring, and training of staff.
- Planning and directing work, evaluating performance, and addressing employee concerns.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of three years of experience with a Law Enforcement Agency or two years with Alamosa County Sheriff's Office.
- Valid Driver's License required.
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
- Certification as a Peace Officer and Detention Officer is desirable.
Physical Requirements:
The employee must be capable of performing physical tasks such as standing, walking, and lifting up to 100 pounds. The role may involve exposure to various environmental conditions and requires agility and stamina.
