Pharmacy Resident Position at Nuvance Health

Nuvance Health is a leading healthcare provider with a network of hospitals and outpatient locations in Connecticut and New York. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled pharmacy resident to join our team.

Job Summary

The postgraduate year one pharmacy resident position is a postgraduate training position that allows the pharmacy resident to perform as a licensed practitioner while training under the supervision of an experienced preceptor. The pharmacy resident will enhance general competencies in managing medication-use systems and support optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients with a broad range of disease states.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all functions required to ensure proper medication management according to accepted standards of medical, nursing, and pharmacy practice and applicable to hospital policy and/or law.
  • Perform all duties and activities necessary to fulfill competency areas assigned by Pharmacy Director, Pharmacy Managers, Pharmacy Residency Program Director, or Preceptors.
  • Provide safe and appropriate pharmaceutical care, including prescription services to inpatients/outpatients, checking unit-dose medication for appropriate drug, dose, quantity, and packaging integrity, compounding IV medications including chemotherapy, and facilitating availability of first doses and specialty items.
  • Promote and support safe medication management, documenting interventions related to drug therapy, dispensing/providing information on investigational drugs, maintaining and enforcing the documentation and security of controlled substance supplies, monitoring and reporting adverse drug reactions, and documenting all medication incident reports.
  • Develop and implement clinical initiatives along with policies and procedures, share responsibility for formulary review and maintenance, perform drug use evaluations, and evaluate activities of medication administration.
  • Provide medication counseling to patients, provide drug information to physicians, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals, participate and contribute in patient care rounds, attend departmental staff meetings and educational seminars, contribute to pharmacist continuing education seminars, provide in-service education to hospital healthcare professionals, and serve as a preceptor to pharmacy students.
  • Serve as a staff pharmacist as required by ASHP Accreditation Standards for Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Programs and WCHN Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Program.
  • Complete all requirements for completion of the Norwalk Pharmacy residency program.
  • Fulfill all compliance responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
Requirements

Graduate of ACPE accredited Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Program required. Must hold Connecticut pharmacist licensure or be eligible for licensure in Connecticut and must obtain a Connecticut pharmacist license within 90 days from start of residency program. Failure to attain CT pharmacy licensure will result in dismissal from the Norwalk Pharmacy residency program.

The applicant must be a highly motivated pharmacist wanting advanced education and training that leads to an enhanced level of professional pharmacy practice.

Preferred Skills

Applicants with hospital pharmacy experience, knowledge of current standards of pharmacy practice, knowledge of relevant Federal and State laws, considerable interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, ability to maintain records, demonstrable teaching ability, a documented history of research and/or publication experience, a history of presentations to a multidisciplinary and/or professional meeting audience, leadership in professional organizations, and those with awards/honors within pharmacy and community service.

Preferred skills in Cerner, Omnicell, Simply797, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). Become or is a member of a local, regional, and national professional pharmacy organization. Become or is certified in BLS and ACLS. Become or is certified to administer immunizations in the state of Connecticut.
