The Research and Advanced Engineering division at Ford is dedicated to transforming innovative concepts into tangible solutions. The Sensing Technologies and Algorithms group plays a pivotal role in Ford's ambition to lead the industry, driving discovery through the strategic integration of sensors, algorithms, and AI-ML across all engineering disciplines within the Ford product ecosystem. This diverse team of specialists is focused on conducting applied research in the areas of both interior and exterior sensing systems, technologies, capabilities, architectures, and features. We are seeking highly skilled and motivated professionals eager to tackle complex, interdisciplinary challenges that require innovative thinking and fundamental research to deliver groundbreaking technology.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will take charge of exploring new sensor technologies, conducting data analysis, developing sensing algorithms, proposing testing methodologies, assessing sensor performance, and overseeing proof-of-concept demonstrations as well as the implementation readiness process. The ideal applicant will possess a strong foundation in one or more sensing technologies and experience in algorithm development using data-driven evaluation techniques. A proven history of managing and advancing a structured research portfolio to transition sensing technologies from conceptualization to application readiness is essential.
  • Enhance and sustain expertise in cutting-edge camera, radar, UWB, and/or lidar hardware advancements.
  • Identify innovative opportunities for automotive sensing systems to enhance quality and reduce expenses.
  • Design sensing solutions for interior applications such as Child Presence Detection, Driver State Monitoring, and Cabin Monitoring, as well as exterior applications like Proximity Detection, 360° surround view, and automated driving.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including strategy and planning, application/product engineers, and others, to define data requirements, validate solutions against real-world benchmarks, ensure quality and robustness, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Engage in self-directed learning and in-depth research to discover novel sensing solutions applicable to new challenges with unique feature constraints.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing through publications, teaching, mentoring, and seminars, as well as participation in Ford's learning and development initiatives.
  • Develop a research portfolio to advance external collaborations with leading academic institutions.

  • A Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in the development and implementation of camera, radar, or Ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies.
  • At least 1 year of practical experience in signal processing, data analysis, or computer vision solutions.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in product development and system integration.

  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in developing and implementing camera, radar, UWB, or lidar hardware.
  • 2+ years of experience in signal processing, data analysis, or computer vision solutions.
  • 2+ years of experience in product development and system integration.
  • Experience in designing and testing internal sensor hardware components such as camera systems or UWB antennas.
  • Experience in integrating sensors with embedded or low-power computing hardware such as SOCs or FPGAs.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML techniques for object detection and tracking, scene understanding, multi-modal perception, and sensor fusion.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, innovative mindset, and capacity to identify, propose, and lead new research initiatives that deliver significant value.
