The Sensing Technologies and Algorithms group plays a pivotal role in Ford's ambition to lead the industry by embracing sensors, algorithms, and AI-ML across all engineering sectors. This dynamic team of specialists is focused on conducting applied research in various areas, including interior and exterior sensing systems, technological advancements, and architectural innovations. Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will lead initiatives in exploring novel sensor hardware, conducting data analysis, developing sensing algorithms, and creating test plans. Responsibilities include evaluating sensor performance, delivering proof-of-concept demonstrations, and ensuring readiness for implementation. The ideal applicant will possess a strong foundation in one or more sensing technologies and experience in algorithm development using data-driven evaluation methods. The candidate should demonstrate a successful history of managing a structured research portfolio to advance sensing technologies from conceptual stages to practical applications.
- Enhance and maintain expertise in cutting-edge camera, radar, UWB, and/or lidar hardware advancements.
- Identify innovative opportunities to enhance automotive sensing systems, improving quality while reducing costs.
- Develop sensing solutions for interior applications such as Child Presence Detection, Driver State Monitoring, and Cabin Monitoring, as well as exterior applications like Proximity Detection, 360° surround view, and automated driving technologies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including strategy and planning, application/product engineers, to define data requirements, validate solutions against real-world benchmarks, and ensure quality and continuous improvement.
- Engage in self-directed learning and in-depth research to discover novel sensing solutions applicable to new challenges with unique feature constraints.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing through publications, teaching, mentoring, and participation in Ford's learning and development initiatives.
- Develop a research portfolio to advance external collaborations with leading academic institutions.
Applicants should possess:
- A Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in the development and implementation of camera, radar, or Ultra-wideband (UWB) technologies.
- At least 1 year of practical experience in signal processing, data analysis, or computer vision solutions.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in product development and system integration.
- A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in developing and implementing camera, radar, UWB, or lidar technologies.
- 2+ years of experience in signal processing, data analysis, or computer vision.
- 2+ years of experience in product development and system integration.
- Experience in designing and testing internal sensor hardware components, such as camera systems or UWB antennas.
- Experience in integrating sensors with embedded or low-power computing hardware, such as SOCs or FPGAs.
- Familiarity with AI/ML techniques for object detection, tracking, scene understanding, multi-modal perception, and sensor fusion.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, innovative thinking, and a capacity to propose and lead new research initiatives that deliver significant value.
- A passion for staying informed about large-scale challenges and transformative changes in sensing technologies and their real-time applications within Ford's engineering landscape.
