YOUR ROLE


As the Chief Executive Officer of 20Fathoms, you will oversee all facets of the organization’s Vision, Mission, and Values, ensuring effective execution.

You will represent the organization publicly, leading your team with a clear focus on objectives and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Your commitment to the success of startups in the region is paramount, and you will prioritize regional development and growth.

You will engage with, collaborate with, and report to the Board of Directors.

Vision and Strategy Development: You will possess an executive presence, responsible for crafting a 5+ year organizational vision and its operational implementation.
Operational Execution: You will manage the daily execution of the organizational vision and strategy, encompassing facility management, Annual Operating Plan development, and funding allocation.
Financial Stewardship: With strong financial expertise, you will ensure 20Fathoms meets its immediate financial obligations and plans for future sustainability.

Your role includes securing diverse income streams from donors, sponsors, grants, and programs while maintaining governance and compliance.

You will collaborate with the CFO to manage the organization’s financial health prudently.

Team Leadership and Ecosystem Engagement:

You will be responsible for recruiting, developing, and managing a team of 12-18 individuals aligned with the organization’s objectives.

Your passion for supporting entrepreneurs and founders will drive the creation of skilled jobs in the NW Region of Michigan.

Public Advocate: You will cultivate and maintain essential relationships with community, regional, and state-wide supporters and influencers, frequently representing 20Fathoms in public forums. You will enhance and protect the strength of the 20Fathoms brand, becoming the go-to expert on technology-based startups and entrepreneurship in the region.
Entrepreneurial Spirit: With a background as a founder or entrepreneur, you will embrace leadership and accountability, demonstrating a proactive approach to challenges.
Team Development: You will identify individual strengths and weaknesses, working to enhance the collective performance through effective team management.
Fundraising Leadership: You will engage with donors and sponsors to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes, recognizing the vital role of philanthropy in a thriving ecosystem.
Effective Communicator: Your strong verbal and written communication skills will be essential, allowing you to maintain organized and analytical processes while fostering interpersonal relationships.
Visionary Thinker: You will appreciate the organization’s history, current status, and future potential, charting a clear path forward.
Community Focused: You will understand that the ecosystem is intertwined with the community, prioritizing networking and active listening to support entrepreneurs and members.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Visionary Leadership: You will embody the 20Fathoms mission, serving as the primary advocate for its goals. You will inspire your professional staff with energetic and aspirational leadership, clearly articulating the organization’s growth trajectory.
Entrepreneurship Programming: You will design and implement timely entrepreneurial programs tailored to the needs of our audience, ensuring alignment with overarching objectives and measurable outcomes. Your focus will be on serving our constituents at the highest level, meeting them at their respective stages in the startup journey.
Priority Setting: You will establish organization-wide priorities, ensuring alignment across teams and contributors.
Community Collaboration: You will engage with key partners throughout the region and state, building and maintaining critical relationships that enhance partnerships and the reputation of 20Fathoms. You will actively seek feedback and input to ensure alignment across collaborations.
Fundraising: You will oversee all income-generating activities, from individual donor engagement to corporate sponsorships and grant income.
Communications and Reporting: You will prepare and present clear, concise materials for the Board of Directors, collaborating with them to execute the organization’s Vision and Mission.
Financial Oversight: You will ensure the organization’s financial health, managing budgets, cash flow, and future projections while maintaining transparent and compliant financial records.
Compliance Management: You will lead all aspects of nonprofit and grant program compliance, ensuring timely reporting and adherence to state and federal regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of a BA/BS degree, preferably a graduate degree in a relevant technology or business field, or equivalent experience with a technical background.
Proven experience leading a business or business unit with at least 5 full-time employees and a corresponding annual budget.
Knowledge of the technology and/or startup sector.
Established relationships within the local and regional community to effectively network and advocate for the region.
Proficiency in public speaking.
Experience managing commercial business relationships, including contracts and agreements.
Familiarity with CRM software applications (HubSpot preferred) is advantageous.
Knowledge of nonprofit organizations and grant compliance is beneficial.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Compensation: This is a full-time exempt position with a salary range of $120,000-$150,000 annually.
Benefits:

Health, dental, and vision insurance premiums are fully covered for employees, with options for family coverage available through payroll deduction. Retirement plans include 401k and/or Roth options, eligible after one month of service. The organization offers customary paid holidays and a generous paid time off (PTO) policy, along with access to an on-site fitness center.


On-site Presence:

The primary work location will be at the 20Fathoms main office, with a critical need for on-site presence.

Event Attendance: Attendance at evening events at the main site and with community partners may be required.
Travel: Some travel for meetings and conferences may be necessary.
