Role Summary:

The Principal Engineer is accountable for orchestrating and directing engineering initiatives, employing sophisticated engineering expertise that necessitates extensive knowledge. This role may involve overseeing a small team of engineering specialists as a project leader, making autonomous decisions that typically do not undergo routine technical scrutiny. A minimum of 10 years of experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering are essential, with Professional Engineering certification highly favored.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Principal Engineer will manage the design processes for designated transmission generation tie lines associated with Wind, Solar, and Battery Energy Storage, as well as independent transmission line projects.
  • In the early conceptual phase, collaboration with the Early Stage Project Manager is crucial to define and influence project requirements and scope alongside the Development Group. Projects may initiate as competitive transmission project proposals or as new ventures for affiliated entities.
  • Securing engineering consulting resources from an approved supplier list is a critical task, which includes developing a scope of work, obtaining bids, and evaluating proposals through the Integrated Supply Chain Group.
  • Coordination with project stakeholders is essential to establish and secure routes, support engineering data, and obtain necessary permits for the design and construction of transmission lines, including geotechnical and lidar data.
  • The Principal Engineer is responsible for coordinating engineering deliverables to support competitive proposals and the design and construction phases of projects, including Issued for Bid, Issued for Procurement, Issued for Construction, and As-built documentation.
  • This position requires collaboration with various groups to ensure project success, representing internal and external interests, and providing updates on progress, challenges, and risk management during meetings with management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • A minimum of 7 years of direct experience in the development, design, engineering, and construction of High Voltage Transmission line projects.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of transmission design, excellent communication and project management skills, a proactive approach, proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to value engineering and design quality.
  • Technical competence is required, including the ability to interpret one-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangements, and other common deliverables.
  • Willingness to travel within North America is necessary.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in Project Engineering and/or Project Management with a strong proactive approach. PMP and/or P.E. certification in a related discipline is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as PLSCADD, Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Primavera, and other relevant software is highly desirable.
