Position Overview

This managerial role is situated within the corporate Environmental Services Department of NextEra Energy (NEE).

The ideal candidate will oversee environmental due diligence, policy guidance, and the licensing and permitting processes for greenfield transmission development across the Central U.S., including the Midwest, central plains, and parts of the desert southwest, for all principal subsidiaries and affiliates of NextEra Energy.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the capability to lead a team of environmental specialists in support of diverse technologies within the electric infrastructure sector.

The primary focus will be on electric transmission and substations. The candidate must be adept at managing multiple programs that involve complex environmental and regulatory challenges. They will provide counsel to multidisciplinary teams regarding environmental site constraints and permitting strategies to facilitate the development of transmission infrastructure.

Key responsibilities include supervising a team of Environmental Specialists/Project Managers who collaborate closely with transmission development teams to assess potential projects, identify permitting requirements and risks, develop project timelines and budgets, and complete federal, state, and local environmental permitting for transmission initiatives.

A comprehensive understanding of relevant environmental regulations, such as the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and the National Historic Preservation Act, is crucial for this position.

The candidate must stay informed about applicable national, state, and local environmental policies and regulations, possess the ability to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders, regulators, subject matter experts, and other parties, and lead the resolution of intricate environmental issues.

The manager will ensure NEE's compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, as well as internal policies.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee a team of professionals tasked with providing due diligence and permitting services to various business units within the electric infrastructure teams to ensure favorable regulatory outcomes, including maintaining compliance with environmental authorizations, permits, rules, and regulations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with customers from development, operational, and construction business units across the organization.
  • Provide leadership to formulate strategies and address complex environmental challenges through expertise in environmental laws and regulations.
  • Communicate deficiencies, risks, and corrective measures to management and stakeholders.
  • Supervise project planning, budget management, and scheduling.
  • Offer strategic direction to teams during negotiations with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Manage personnel activities such as staffing, budget oversight, performance goal setting, evaluations, and mentoring.

  • Secure all necessary federal, state, and local environmental licenses, permits, and approvals for development projects.
  • Support multiple projects involving intricate environmental and regulatory issues and assist in comprehensive environmental due diligence assessments for potential acquisitions.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant national and state-level environmental policies and regulations.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, subject matter experts, and other parties to assist in resolving complex environmental matters.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, as well as internal policies.
  • Translate regulations and permits into actionable compliance tasks for construction.
  • Provide specialized environmental expertise and technical support.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience: 10+ years.
