Job Title: Production Manager/Production Assistant Manager

Job Summary:

Hachette Book Group is seeking a highly skilled Production Manager/Production Assistant Manager to oversee the production and manufacturing of books for our Little, Brown Books for Young Readers imprint and some Adult Trade titles. This is a hybrid-work position that requires strong leadership skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Production Coordination: Coordinate all phases of book production and manufacturing from composition, prepress, printing, and binding through final delivery.
  • Negotiation and Cost Analysis: Negotiate pricing with vendors and conduct cost analysis to ensure budget requirements are met.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with Publisher, Editorial, and Design teams to conceptualize and develop products, applying creative solutions to solve special product needs and budgetary constraints.
  • Vendor Management: Work closely with vendors to manage supplier performance, ensure schedule fidelity, high-quality products, and budget requirements.
  • Production Scheduling: Monitor production schedules through coordination with outside vendors and in-house departments to ensure on-time delivery at every stage of manufacturing.
  • Prepress Requirements: Manage prepress requirements, traffic, and color-correct proofs, and attend press checks as needed.
  • Budgeting and Cost Estimation: Prepare and update budgets and cost estimates both seasonally and on a title-by-title basis. The Manager will also review seasonal manufacturing budgets for the entire imprint.
  • Ebook Production: Procure ebook production services and coordinate QA reviews.
  • Meetings and Communication: Attend and participate in regular production meetings and management meetings with other departments in the imprint.
  • Cost-Saving Opportunities: Analyze production specifications with an eye towards potential cost-saving opportunities and communicate alternative specifications to editorial and design departments for discussion.
  • Vendor Quality Issues: Work independently, keeping management and the imprint informed of any service disruption or vendor quality issues, and communicate such issues to the vendor, in collaboration with management as needed.
  • Day-to-Day Duties: Supervise day-to-day duties of direct reports.
  • Vendor Performance Monitoring: The Manager will join the HBG-wide Production management team in monitoring vendor performance and exploring and vetting new vendors.

Requirements:

  • Experience: Assistant Manager: 5+ years of professional experience in the trade publishing industry. Manager: 10+ years of professional experience in the trade publishing industry.
  • Leadership Skills: Assistant Manager: Leadership skills with some management experience preferred. Manager: Leadership skills in managing a team, preferably with 3 to 5+ years of management experience.
  • Skills: Strong experience with manufacturing in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Employ solid negotiating skills. Thorough, accurate, and articulate verbal and written communication skills. Possess a high level of organization and detail-oriented, creative, flexible, and able to prioritize. Collaborate well with a diverse team of internal and external stakeholders. Ability to utilize technology to improve workflow. Strong color assessment skills with the ability to provide guidance to in-house teams and appropriate instruction and color correction and retouching directives to outside suppliers.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency in Excel, basic math, calculating, organizing, and presenting data. Skilled use of Mac platform. Comfortable with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) as well as Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Workfront, a plus. Experience with Digital Asset Management systems. Experience with product safety, CPSIA compliance, state laws as well as European, Australian, and Canadian regulations a plus.
