About the Role
The Engineering Division is responsible for providing project and program support for activities primarily in the public right-of-way. The projects typically encompass public infrastructure, including roads, streets, bridges, signals, lighting, and stormwater facilities.

The Senior Civil Engineer engages in a range of challenging and intricate professional engineering tasks related to designated responsibilities. This includes, but is not limited to, the development and assessment of complex transportation planning, traffic engineering, land development, capital improvement, drainage, and special projects. The role also involves offering professional engineering support concerning assigned responsibilities, developing and executing long-range planning, and working on various state and federally funded initiatives.

The Senior Civil Engineer will have the chance to participate in a variety of transportation-related projects and programs.

Examples of Responsibilities
  • Execute complex technical duties and manage programs/projects related to the area of assignment.
  • Establish and implement goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the work unit as necessary.
  • Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations.
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in assigned operations.
  • Assist in managing the City's capital improvement program and prioritize needs and funding opportunities.
  • Review and prepare land development plans, construction documents, and project designs.
  • Provide estimates for various engineering projects, including street lighting and drainage improvements.
  • Attend and facilitate internal and external meetings, representing the City as needed.
  • Prepare and analyze specifications, plans, estimates, and reports related to engineering projects.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of civil engineering related to transportation, drainage, and public works operations.
  • Land use development, traffic design, and construction inspection processes.
  • Modern office procedures and specialized engineering software.
Ability to:
  • Understand and apply relevant ordinances, regulations, and policies.
  • Perform complex engineering calculations and prepare technical reports.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Five years of professional experience in civil engineering or a related field, with one year of supervisory experience preferred.

Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or a related field.

License or Certificate: Valid California driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance may be required. Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in California is preferred.
