Role Overview
The Community Support Specialist plays a vital role in coordinating special education initiatives in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This position involves planning and executing school-wide programs and events that foster a supportive educational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with educational standards by obtaining necessary qualifications, including a bachelor's degree and full state certification.
- Maintain a consistent presence from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, throughout the academic year.
- Supervise students during classes, breaks, meals, and transitions to promote a safe and productive atmosphere.
- Participate in after-hours events such as family nights, student performances, and parent-teacher conferences.
- Demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the educational experience of students both inside and outside the classroom.
- Implement and refine school systems and culture to support student achievement.
- Design activities that help students meet academic and social benchmarks.
- Conduct assessments to evaluate progress toward established standards.
- Engage families in their children's educational journey.
- Participate in comprehensive staff training and orientation programs.
- Collaborate with colleagues in planning and executing grade-level and school-wide initiatives.
- Provide instruction in core subjects, particularly in reading, as needed.
- Work closely with the Dean of Students and Families to uphold behavioral expectations and foster family partnerships.
Direct Services
Deliver essential services to the school community, including:
- Providing crisis intervention and behavior management to help students meet high expectations.
- Coordinating meetings with families to discuss student progress.
- Identifying students and families who may benefit from counseling services.
- Managing the referral process for social services and special education.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of external resources and services.
- Facilitating workshops to educate families and staff on relevant issues.
- Organizing community-building events.
Qualifications
A Master's degree in Social Work and a valid School Social Worker Certification from the New Jersey Department of Education are required. Experience in urban educational settings is highly preferred.
