Position OverviewThe Pediatric Support Specialist is responsible for evaluating the emotional and psychological needs of young patients and their families, providing and executing supportive and therapeutic interventions. These may include preparation for medical procedures, emotional support during treatments, and facilitating various forms of play.
This role serves as an advocate for pediatric patients and their families, acting as a resource for hospital staff regarding child development, family-centered care, trauma-informed practices, and bereavement support.
Key Responsibilities:
1.
Deliver Child Life services in pediatric departments and other areas as needed.
2.
Evaluate the psychosocial and developmental requirements of patients and families, adjusting services and objectives accordingly.
3.
Employ therapeutic techniques such as psychological preparation, procedural assistance, therapeutic play, and bereavement support to aid in coping with hospitalization.
4.
Provide age-appropriate, trauma-informed education and emotional support regarding healthcare experiences, hospital settings, new diagnoses, and grief.
5.
Record interventions and services promptly in the patient's electronic health record.
6.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to communicate, educate, and advocate for patient- and family-centered care.
7.
Delegate appropriate tasks to Activities Assistants and volunteers, and supervise practicum students as assigned.
8.
Adhere to professional, ethical, and educational standards as outlined by the Association of Child Life Professionals.
Experience Requirements0-2 years of experience required; 3-5 years preferred.
Education RequirementsA Bachelor's degree in Child Life or a related field is required, or a Bachelor's degree with completed Child Life Certification.
License/Certification RequirementsCertification as a Child Life Specialist is required; must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
Skills and Qualifications:
Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and colleagues.
Completion of a 600+ hour Child Life Internship is mandatory.
CPR-BLS certification is preferred.
Special RequirementsThis is a full-time position, requiring 40 hours per week, with a schedule of Monday to Thursday, 12 PM to 10:30 PM.
