Permanent Educational Support Specialist

Under the guidance of a certified educator and/or school administrator, ESS educational support specialists enhance student learning and assist classroom educators with instructional, behavioral management, and administrative responsibilities. They cater to the physical, behavioral, and academic requirements of specific students or groups of students with special needs throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional support under the direction of the classroom educator for individual students and/or small groups of students.
  • Assist the classroom educator with managing the classroom and general supervision of the class, adhering to established routines and procedures.
  • Act as the primary source of information and assistance to any substitute educator assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Support students with special needs by implementing provisions specified in their IEPs/504 Plans.
  • Supervise students in various settings such as the cafeteria, schoolyard, hallways, during special activities, on field trips, and/or during before and after school programs as directed.
  • Monitor student behavior and progress, maintain records, and report to the classroom educator and/or other designated school personnel.
  • Assist with administrative tasks as directed, including recording grades, setting up equipment, and preparing instructional materials.
  • Attend to students' physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs; assist with translation and hygiene needs when necessary.
  • Foster a safe and orderly classroom environment; take all reasonable precautions to protect students, facilities, and materials.
  • Assist with student transportation during arrival and departure.
  • Exhibit cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned by school administration and ESS.
  • Understand and comply with all ESS and school district policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate personal care for students, including diapering and toileting, following individualized care plans to ensure proper hygiene and comfort. Training will be provided to ensure adherence to best practices and promote a supportive, respectful environment for each student's needs.
