Job Overview

Position Title: Unit Clerk

Department: Medical / Nursing

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Supervises: N/A

Qualifications:

Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of one year of experience in a role involving direct patient interaction within the alcohol and drug treatment sector is required. Effective communication skills with patients are essential. A foundational understanding of recovery principles is necessary. Typing proficiency of at least 35 words per minute is expected, with prior experience in medical records being advantageous.

  1. Visual acuity of 20/40 or better with correction in each eye and acceptable hearing capabilities (hearing aids permitted).
  2. Legible handwriting is required.
  3. Ability to remain seated for 4 to 6 hours during an 8-hour shift.
  4. Capability to bend and stoop from an upright position to the knees.
  5. If in recovery, a minimum of two years of continuous verifiable abstinence is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Process orders from patient charts.
  2. Handle incoming phone calls.
  3. Perform unit tasks as directed by the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.
  4. Manage patient interactions.
  5. Engage in special projects as assigned.

Compliance:

Must adhere to the regulations outlined in 42 CFR Part 2 regarding the confidentiality of drug and alcohol abuse patient records, as well as 45 CFR concerning the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This role entails unrestricted access to patient-identifying information and health records.

Essential Duties:

  1. Ability to accurately take orders.
  2. Answer phone calls in alignment with organizational policies and philosophies.
  3. Develop and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.
  4. Ensure the availability of unit supplies related to medications.
  5. Organize and maintain files.
  6. Prepare admission packets and charts for new patients.
  7. Assist in the preparation of medical records following patient discharge.
  8. Provide typing support for nursing documentation as needed.
  9. Facilitate orientation for new staff members.
  10. Execute directives within the treatment area.
  11. Assist in the orientation of new patients.
  12. Engage therapeutically with patients at the Nurses' Station, facilitating access to appropriate staff as needed.
  13. Maintain patient identification bracelets, photo ID systems, and label databases.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned.
  15. Collaborate effectively with colleagues, management, clients, and prospective clients.
  16. Maintain a constant state of alertness to ensure job safety.
  17. Demonstrate regular attendance.
